Magnolia 14-4,
Conotton Valley 8-0
Abbey Durig struck out nine in a double-header sweep over Connotton Valley, 14-4 and 8-0, April 11 in New Martinsville.
Durig singled twice in the opener, while Davianne Croasmun doubled and singled twice to pace Magnolia.
In the nite cap, Audrey Gibb singled twice and Croasmun singled and doubled to pace the Eagles. Logan Spencer tripled and Brooke Hostetler doubled in the second game.
Wirt 13, Magnolia 9
Davianne Croasmun walked twice, singled and homered, but it wasn’t enough to get past Wirt County 13-9 in girls’ softball action March 31 in New Martinsville.
Wirt scored two unearned runs in the first frame, but Croasmun hit a line- drive home run that skidded off the right center fence top, knocking in Andrea Gibb, who reached on an error.
After a scoreless second inning, Wirt took advantage of a lead-off Magnolia error and brought a run home right after with back-to-back singles.
However, Gibb opened the third with a stand-up double, and, after an out, Wirt intentionally gave Croasmun one of her two free passes. Logan Riggs got on with a fielder’s choice, and both Riggs and Croasmun scored on a Katie Blatt one-on single to retake the lead at 4-3.
The Lady Tigers scored five runs in the fourth, three more in the fifth and two more in the sixth to break it wide open with a 13-4 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth. However, the Blue Eagle bats started to warm up as they pounded out six hits in the inning to narrow the deficit to 13-8. After a leadoff strikeout, V Anderson singled and Magnolia popped out for the second out.
Kasey Hilpert and Gibb each lined back-to-back singles to load the bases. Abby Durig singled up the gut to knock in Anderson and Croasmun singled to score Hilpert. Two straight Lady Tiger errors scored Gibb and Durig, but with the bases loaded, they struck out looking to end the inning.
Wirt belted back-to-back singles, but two fielder’s choices and a ground out ended the top of the seventh.
After a Magnolia leadoff strikeout a MHS player reached on a Tiger error and scored later on a Gibb single. With the bases juiced, the Eagles struck out looking for the third time in the game. They commited 10 errors, and left nine base-runners in scoring position.
Durig took the loss, with four strike outs and no walks. At the plate, Gibb doubled and singled twice, while knocking in a run and picking off two Tiger runners on the bases. Croasmun singled, homered, plated two and walked twice, while Blatt and Hilpert each pounded out two hits. Anderson added a single for the Lady Blue.
Steubenville Catholic 10,
Magnolia 1
Magnolia scored the game’s first run, but it wouldn’t hold up as the home standing Steubenville Catholic was clicking on all cylinders to win 10-1 March 30.
Durig opened the game with a double and Hilpert singled later, knocking Durig in. Croasmun singled and doubled, while Hilpert added another single for all the Magnolia hits.
Durig was the pitcher of record. She struck out two and walked two. She gave up six hits, as the Magnolia defense committed six errors in the game against the Crucaders.
Bishop Donahue 9,
Magnolia 7
Audrey Gibb singled three times and knocked in a run, but it wasn’t quite enough to get past Bishop Donahue 9-7 in girls’ softball action April 6 in McMechen.
Abby Durig singled and doubled at the dish, while striking out four Bishop batters and walking three to pace the Blue Eagles.
River 10,
Conotton Valley 0
The River Pilots scored no-hit victories over Connotton Valley and Hundred, 10-0 and 13-1 in the Magnolia Invitational Tournament over the weekend, before dropping the championship game to Musselman, 7-1.
Haylee Bowers knocked in the only run for the Lady Pilots in the championship game, sending one over the fence for a home run. She also tripled, and singled twice, plating three in the 10-0 shutout over the Rockets of Connotton Valley. Rosie Romick pitched the no-hitter. She struck out six and didn’t walk a batter.
In addition, Brissa Marshall had two hits and drove in three runs, while Madi Taylor knocked in a pair on two base hits. Taylor, Marshall and Bowers combined for seven hits on seven hits.
In addition, Emilee Heater added an RBI single, while Mackenzie Marshall drilled a double.
River 13, Hundred 1
In the 13-1 mercy-rule shorten gasme against Hundred Bailey Caldwell picked up the no-hitter, striking out seven Lady Hornets. Heater had the big bat for the Pilots knocking in two.
River 11,
Magnolia 2
Lady Pilot Rosie Romick struck out 10 Blue Eagle batters, while knocking in a run on a trio of base-hits to lead River to an 11-2 victory over Magnolia April 7 in Sardis.
The Eagles scored their only two runs in the opening frame, but Romick quieted the Big Blue bats the rest of the way. Abby Durig took the loss for the Eagles. She struck out seven and walked two. Logan Spencer singled twice and knocked in a run to lead the Magnolia offense.
Haylee Bowers had a big night for the Lady Pilots. She was a double away from hitting for the cycle as she plated four teammates. Madi Taylor contributed a pair of RBI singles, while Mackenzie Marshall plated one on a pair of singles. Monica Curtis drilled a double, while Bailey Caldwell scooted around the bases on a stand-up triple.
River 6, Magnolia 0
Monica Curtis pitched a three-hit 6-0 shutout against Magnolia April 10 in New Martinsville, striking out three and walking none. Abby Durig took the loss. She struck out three and walked one for the Lady Eagles.
Romick and Curtis each singled twice, while Bowers belted a single and a double, plating a pair to lead River. Durig singled twice and Katie Blatt doubled for Magnolia.
Paden City 10, Valley 1
The Paden City Wildcats defeated the Valley Lumberjills, 10-1 April 6 and lost a double header to Cameron April 13, 10-2 and 11-0.
In the win over Valley Taylor Cosper had a three hit nite. She homered and singled twice, while knocking in three runs. Madeline Cox doubled, while Tori Anderson, Kayla Hizer, Abby Still, Amber and Audrey Neff each belted singles. Amber Neff and Anderson each knocked in a run.
Aubrey Neff picked up the win for the Lady ‘Cats. She struck out six and walked only one.
Bre Harris took the loss for Valley. She struck out two and walked five. No stats have been sent in by Valley.
Cameron 10-11,
Paden City 2-0
Amber and Audrey Neff each struck out one Cameron batter in a double header loss. Aubrey Neff recorded a single and a double, while Graeson Baker knocked in a run in the opener, while Cosper drilled the only two hits in game two.
