WVSSAC Class-A Boys State Basketball Seedings Updated

The Magnolia Blue Eagles grabbed the number three seed in this week’s Class-A State Tournament at the Charleston Civic Center and will take on the number six seed Notre Dame Irish at 9:30 this morning.

Five of the eight teams took advantage of the do-over game, where the sectional loser went on the road to the other sectional winner’s venue. Wheeling Central, Greater Beckley Christian School, Tucker County, Williamstown and Charleston Catholic all pulled out road wins, while Magnolia, Tug Valley and Notre Dame won home games in regionals. The top seed is (22-3) Wheeling Central, while the second seed is (22-3) Greater Beckley. The Blue Eagles (20-5) are third seed, while Tug Valley (17-6) follows at fourth. Williamstown got the number five seed with a record of (22-3) and the sixth seed was Notre Dame (16-8). The seventh seed is Tucker County, 17-6 on the season, while the eight seed was Charleston Catholic with a 15-6 season record.

Wheeling Central went on the road and beat the Region I, Section II Champion Paden City Wildcats 66-53. GBCS defeated Valley Fayette 87-36 on the road and Magnolia hosted St. Marys and defeated them 63-50.

Tug Valley welcomed Richwood and won 63-37. The fifth-seed Williamstown went on the road and defeated Huntington St. Joe 56-53. Notre Dame welcomed Pocahontas County to Clarksburg and was victorious 84-62. Tucker County visited Moorefield and won there, 62-53, while Charleston Catholic came back from Gilmer County with a 54-39 decision.

The Eagles are led by junior standout Preston Boswell, who is averaging 28.33 points per game in the post-season, while senior Spencer Campbell is averaging 15.33 ppg. Mitch Winters is a little under 10 ppg while Kyle Ritz is averaging seven markers a game. Also contributing is Derrick Blain with five points, while Tyler Anderson is netting slightly under four points a game off the bench.

Blue Eagle junior Zach Haught and sophomore Tyler Williamson, as well as freshman Brooks Parsons, all come off the bench to contribute when needed. Juniors, Jarett Delany, Alex Anderson and Dylan Jackson and Peau Halahingano finish off the team’s roster.

Should the Eagles win the game Wednesday, they will face the winner of GBC-Tucker County at 9:30 Friday in the semis, with a spot in the Class-A state title game on the line on Saturday at noon.
