Lady Wildcats Fall A Bit Short Against Lady Irish

By Staff | Jan 8, 2014

The Bellaire St. John Lady Irish sank a pair of free throws during the closing seconds of the game to help them defeat the road warrior Paden City Lady Wildcats 51-47 Jan. 4 in Bellaire.

With the game knotted at 44 in the closing minutes, St. John drained a jumper to take a two-point lead inside the three-minute mark of the final period. But, ‘Cats’ Cydney Blatt would net 1-2 charity tosses to pull within a point.

Bellaire called a time out to talk things over and came out of the break in slow-down mode. After an inadvertent whistle stopped play, St. John swished a deuce to give the hosts a 48-45 advantage inside the two-minute mark.

However, the Wildcats would miss a jumper and Bellaire would take possession on a tie up off the rebound. St. John were quickly fouled and sank the front end of a 1-1 to extend its lead to four points.

Paden City’s Myah Charkawi sank a pair of charity tosses to cut the deficit in half, capping off a brilliant outing where she netted a game-high 24 points. Then the Wildcat defense would cause an Irish turnover, but a Charkawi jumper missed its mark that would have tied the game.

Bellaire corralled the rebound but was quickly tied up to give the ‘Cats one more chance to knot the game or to take the lead. With Charkawi driving to the post, the Irish blocked her shot and the ball would go out of bounds to Bellaire. St. John then cashed in on one of two charity tosses for the clincher.

Charkawi paced the Lady Wildcats with a game-high 24 points that included 11-12 free throws to go along with 13 rebounds for a double-double. Hannah Stanley and Blatt each tacked on eight markers. Stanley added three assists, while Blatt hauled in nine boards, made seven steals, and swatted away five Irish shots. Taylor Cosper followed in scoring with six points, while making three assists, four steals, and swatting four shots. Kayla Hizer netted a free throw and hauled in seven boards.

Paden City will host a WVHIT contest at 6 p.m. Jan. 18 and then tangle with Bishop Donahue Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. inside the Bob Burton Gymnasium.
