Lumberjacks Trounce Hannan Wildcats 41-8
The Valley High School Lumberjacks were the only area football squad to win their opening game of the 2013 season with a 41-8 routing of the Hannan Wildcats in Pine Grove Aug. 30. The last time the two met was 2009, when Valley shut out the Wildcats 46-0.
“I was pleased with the way we played on both sides of the ball,” said veteran Head Football Coach Tom West. “We made some mistakes, but they can be corrected. I am proud of every single player.”
Trey Streets returned a punt 85 yards to help boost the Lumberjacks to a 34-0 lead at halftime. Streets also hit Chase West from 15 yards out for a TD, with Peyton Palmer adding a two-point conversion from one yard out. Palmer also had 11 totes for 81 yards to help Valley accumulate 290 yards in the ground game.
In addition, Matthew Throckmorton added a TD on a 58-yard run, while T.C. Long scored from the one yard line. Kale Lloyd returned a fumble 75 yards for another Lumberjack strike.
On the ground, Valley was 40-290 and three touchdowns. Palmer went 11-81 and a TD, while Throckmorton was 2-60 and a score. In the air game, the Lumberjacks were 1-4 for 15 yards and a TD, all by Streets.
Valley moved the chains 12 times, while Hannan did so only eight times. Valley gave up 11 yards for one penalty, while the Generals lost 15 yards on three penalties.
The Lumberjacks stay at home next week to face Cameron with a kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
