Big Blue Defense Helps Down Silver Knights, 44-11

By Staff | Sep 14, 2011

Magnolia Blue Eagle gridder Jayson Keller rocked the Tyler Consolidated Field with a sizzling offensive explosion with 178 yards rushing and four touchdowns in helping Magnolia beat Tyler 44-11 for its first win of the season, Sept. 9 in Kidwell.

It didn’t start out well for Magnolia, though. The Silver Knights connected on a nifty 63 yard pitch-and-catch to get withing striking distance. However, the Big Blue defense strapped down their helmets and went to work to hold their hosts to a 21-yard field goal on the Knights’ first possession.

The Knights’ defense held strong on its first effort and forced the Eagles to punt. Magnolia scored its first points on a 10-yard fumble return by Gage Deem, but saw the score board read 6-3, Magnolia, as Eagle kicker Michael Jones missed his first attempt of the season.

The Magnolia defense stopped the Knights at their own 38 yard line and Magnolia would cap off the drive with a Jayson Keller five-yard TD run. Jones’ PAT was true and the Eagles took a 13-3 lead after one period of play.

Keller and Jones put up all the points in the second period of play. Keller would start and finish the period with a 15-yard TD run and a five yard scamper, while Jones nailed both conversion kicks and split the uprights on a 25 yard field goal to extend the Blue Eagle lead to 30-3 at the break.

In the second half of action, the Eagles tallied seven more points with another 22-yard TD run by Keller and the PAT kick by Jones.

The final Magnolia tally was capped by a Drew Keller 15-yard TD run set up positive totes by Kage Rhode and Drew Keller.

The Knights went the distance on a nice 19-yard pass play late in the game for the final points of the game.

Jayson Keller had 205 total yards and scored four touchdowns to pace the Blue Eagle offense, while Rohde galloped for 55 yards on 10 carries. Deem also scored on a 10-yard run off a fumble recovery, while Drew Keller rambled for 30 yards on two carries and a touchdown.

In the air, the Eagles’ Tanner Hanna was10-18 for 79 yards. Jayson hauled in five for 26 yards, while Stephen Rogalski was held to three catches for 25 yards. However, Rogalski caught one of the Knights’ passes for a 40-yard return. Deem caught one pass for 17 yards and Nick Blatt hauled down another for 10 yards.

The Eagles accounted for 19 first downs, while the Knights moved the chains seven times. Offensively, the Knights accounted for 111 yards passing and a TD, while their ground game netted 20 yards on 29 carries.

Rohde paced the Eagles on defense with 10 tackles, while Zach Arrick added a pair of quarterback sacks. Arrick also caused and recovered a Knight fumble.

The Eagles will try to continue their winning ways on Friday, Sept. 16 at Alumni Field against cross-river rival, the River Pilots, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Knights will look to gain their first victory of the season Sept. 16 against the always-tough Blue Devils in St. Marys, with a kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
