Area Volleyball Gets Into Swing Of Things

The Paden City Lady Wildcats split games with Monroe Central and the Linsly School to open their 2011 season Sept. 1. After falling to the Lady ‘Noles in the opening set 25-11 at Skyvue, the Lady ‘Cats came back to win the second set, 22-25, before losing the match 25-10 in the third set.

Pacing the Wildcats was Logan Cosper with a team-high 12 points, 57 sets and had 19 assists, while adding three digs. Amanda Heasley and Kelsey Loy teamed for 17 points, including four service aces. They also combined for eight kills and 10 digs. Josie Fox netted six points and three digs, while Dominique Craft plastered eight kills, and added five points and six digs. Lynnsie Parsons chipped in with four points and seven digs, while landing three kills.

In the second match against the Linsly school, Paden City dropped a 27-29 overtime thriller, before winning the next two sets, 25-10 and 25-20 to win the match.

Craft and Fox split 32 points, while Craft added 19 kills and seven digs. Parsons reached double figures with 11 points and drilled seven kills and four digs. Heasley was one point from double figures, but smashed 14 kills and added five digs. Loy scored all four of her points with service aces, while pounding a pair of kills and five digs. Cosper had 39 assists on 70 sets, while scoring six points.

The Paden City Lady Wildcats won a pair of volleyball matches against Bellaire St. John’s and county rival Valley on Sept. 1 in Bob Burton Gymnasium.

In the opener against the Lady Irish, the Wildcats had a lead late in the match only to see Bellaire come back to capture set one, 22-25. However, Paden City went on to claim the second and third set to win the match by the identical scores of 25-19.

In the third set with Paden City down 19-17, and with ‘Cat junior Lynnsie Parsons serving, the Wildcats scored the final eight points to help claim the much-deserved victory.

Senior hitter Kelsey Loy tallied 20 points, and Dominique Craft chipped in 13 points, including a trio of service aces, while blasting 17 kills and dropping seven digs to pace the Lady Wildcats to its second victory of the season.

Parsons added 14 points and Amanda Heasley netted 10 points, 14 kills and five digs. Other Wildcats contributing scores include Graeson Baker, with seven points and Josie Fox with five points and a team-high eight digs.

Against Valley, Craft scored a dozen points, blasted six kills and added four digs to help lead Paden City to a 25-13 and a 25-16 victory.

Logan Cosper contributed 17 assists and scored nine points, while Parsons and Baker added eight and seven points, respectively. Heasley and Loy shared 11 points and 11 kills, while Haley Hizer came off the bench to net a pair of points.

Valley didn’t provide any stats in this game or the pair of 25-12 two-set losses to Bellaire St John.

The Lady Pilot volleyball team split a couple matches last week, winning in three straight sets to Valley High School on Sept. 6 and losing to Shenandoah in three straight sets, Sept. 8.

Against the Lumberjills, the Pilots won set one and two by the identical scores of 25-15 and prevailed in set three, 25-20, to earn the victory in Pine Grove.

Dakota Earley got top scoring honors for the Lady Pilots with 17 points, including three service aces. Leslie Young, Annie Turner and Brittany Connors contributed 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Torey Potts contributed nine markers and 12 kills.

Young had 11 kills to go along with her 12 points for double-double volleyball style. Hannah Jones had 13 digs, while Turner and Potts shared 10. Potts had a pair of blocked shots, while Turner blocked one and had 24 assists in a fine performance.

The Lumberjills” Hannah Loy had five service aces, while Jessica Ashcraft added 40 sets and two service aces to lead Valley. Brittany Sivert had eight spikes, two of them kills. (No other Valley stats were available.)

On Sept.8 against the 6-0 undefeated Lady Shenandoah Zeps at Dick Potts Gymnasium, Shenandoah won the first two sets 25-9 and then took total command with a 25-8 thumping to win the set in three straight sets.

Stephanie Murdock had six points and eight digs, while Turner added six assists, one kill and four digs to lead the Lady Pilots. Potts blocked three Lady Zep shots and had four kills, while Leslie Young added two kills and two blocks for River.

After a Sept. 12 match with Monroe Central, the Lady Pilots will travel across the Ohio River to tangle with the Lady Eagles of Magnolia, Thursday, Sept. 15 at 6 p.m.

The Eagles’ Lauren Cline scored 19 points, including three service aces and dished off 42 assists to help lift the Eagles past Linsly in three straight sets, 25-13, 25-15 and 25-10 to win the match in Wheeling Sept. 6.

Mallory Chapman added 10 points, including five service aces and 22 digs, while Emily Blake recorded 10 points, five kills and 19 digs. Emily Clegg contributed nine points, nine kills and knocked down a pair of kills. Erin Clegg had a monster game, scoring six points that included four service aces, 10 digs and went 10-19 on spikes that went for kills. Alivia Mellott had three kills.

Against Wheeling Central Sept. 12 in the HammerDome, Blake was very active in recording 20 points and 20 digs, while smacking eight kills. The team scored 19 points with service aces to help lead Magnolia to a three straight victory, 25-9, 27-25 and 25-10 over Wheeling Central. Jordan Babe contributed 13 points, including six aces, while Mackenzie Dawson added 11 points, five of which were service aces and five digs.

Chapman tallied seven points, including three aces, six kills and 15 digs. Melott and Hillary Feldmier added five kills, while the Clegg girls teamed for six points and 18 digs.

Cline added 38 assists and 17 points that included five service aces.

The Lady Eagles will visit John Marshall Wednesday, Sept. 14 before hosting the Lady Pilots Sept. 15 at 6 p.m.

The Magnolia Blue Eagles split their volleyball opener with a 25-9 and 25-13 loss to the Shenandoah Lady ‘Zeps and a 26-24 and 25-17 victory over the host Union Local Lady Jets Sept. 1.

Erin Clegg tallied four points, while Emily Clegg, Jordan Babe, Emily Blake, Mallory Chapman, and Lauren Cline each tallied three points against Shenandoah.

In the match with Union Local, Babe and Chapman each scored in double figures, while Cline netted nine and Blake seven to pace Magnolia in the victory over the Jets. Erinn Clegg tallied five markers, while Emily Clegg added four points and Makenzie Dawson put up three points for Magnolia.
