Magnolia Boys’ Track Team Wins Region I Crown

The Magnolia Blue Eagle Boys’ Track Team won eight events, while finishing second three times and finishing third five times to help capture the Region I Class-AA crown at Ritchie High School May 13 in Ellenboro. Magnolia posted 140 points, while Ritchie finished second with 123 points and Tyler Consolidated came in third with 85 points in the eight-team Region I meet.

Blue Eagle standout Brendan Kacor bested his competition in the 100-meter dash and the long jump and then finished runnerup to teammate Stephen Rogalski in the 200-meter dash to get things rolling for the Big Blue. Meanwhile, Rogalski would capture the 400-meter dash title. He also was on the winning 4×100 meter relay team and the 4×200 meter relay team that gave Magnolia a huge lead to start the meet.

Then, the Eagles added a second place finish in the shot and discus by Matthew Riggs and Alec Hinerman crossed the finish line first in the 1,600-meter and the 3,200-meter run. Bill Feeney finished third in both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter run, while the 4×800-meter and the 4×800-meter relay teams also finished third and will all represent Magnolia in the state tournament at Laidley Field in Charleston May 20-21.

In the girls Class-AA Regional Track Meet, Tyler Consolidated outscored Weir, 147-133, to win first place, while Magnolia placed seventh.

The MHS Shuttle team of Emily Patterson, Emily Amos, Aly Smith and Holly McDonald will continue its quest for back-to-back state titles after finishing first in the regionals.

Class-A Boys

Doddridge County tallied 212 points to win the West Virginia Class-A Boys Region I Championship, while Wheeling Central finished second and Valley third.

In individual events, Casey Pingley from Valley High School won the 100-meter and the 200-meter dash contests, while Spencer Mason finished second in both the shot and discus. The Lumberjacks’ 4×200-meter team and their 4×800-meter team also qualified for the state tournament, placing second and third, respectively. The ‘Jacks shuttle team and the 4×100 meter relay team also qualified for the state track meet.

Girls Class-A

Doddridge County swept the Class-A regional title when the girls’ team finished in the top spot with 151 points. Wheeling Central placed second and Valley and Paden City finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

The top three in each event qualifies for the state tournament starting this Friday at Laidley Field in Charleston. For the Valley Lumberjills, the 4×400-meter team of Brittany Sivert, Tristen Willey, Danette Hayes and Jade Starkey ran a 4:42.60 to win the event, while the 4×100 and the 4×200-meter relay teams each placed third. In individual events, Tristen Wiley finished second in the high jump, while Jade Starkey finished third in the 100-meter hurdles. Also Tristen Willey qualified in the high jump, Casey Ueltschy in the discus; Abby Willey and Dani Hayes in the long jump.

The Lady Wildcats’ Taylor Parsons placed second in the 100-meter hurdles and qualified in the 300-meter hurdles, while Lynnsie Parsons and Logan Cosper each finished third in the 100- meter dash and 400-meter dash, respectively. The Wildcats 4×200-meter relay team and their shuttle team also qualified for the state tournament May 20-21.
