Lady Hornets Lose Opener
The Hundred Lady Hornets tallied five runs in the first frame, but the Clay-Battelle Cee-Bees answered with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the first to claim a 13-5 mercy-rule shortened game March 18 at Mylan Park in Morgantown to open the Hornet softball season.
Hundred’s Raven McDiffitt was 3-3 and scored a run, while Shelley Cork and Haley Hayes each added a pair of hits to pace the Lady Hornets. Macy Woods and Lindsay Burley each crossed the home plate safely, while smashing singles.
Mercedes Goff took the loss from the mound, giving up 13 hits, striking out four, and walking four. The Lady Hornet defense didn’t help much, committing eight fielding errors in the game.
“I was very proud of the girls,” said second-year Head Softball Coach Brian Bartlett. “They played hard and, for her first time pitching, Mercedes did very well. It was only the third time we have been outside and once we get more time on the field, I think we will be fine.”
Hundred and the Cee-Bees will get a rematch March 28 at 5:30 in Hundred under their new lighted ball field.
