By Staff | Mar 9, 2011

The River High School Lady Pilots basketball season came to a halt in the Ohio Division III District semifinals in Steubenville March 1 when state-ranked Garaway Pirates came from behind to steal away a 34-29 victory

The Lady Pilots’ gallant attempt to knock-off Garaway from the tournament started in the opening period as they crept their way to a 9-6 lead, and raced to the locker room, stunning the Lady Pirates with a halftime lead of 18-13.

Garaway was at the edge of walking the plank, until a 11-6 run knotted the game at 24 with eight minutes remaining in the game. The Lady Pirates took its second lead of the game early into the final period on a free throw; they never relinquished the lead.

In the fourth period, possession after possession the Pilots would turn the ball over or miss golden opportunities at the charity stripe, while the Pirates would cash in on their freebies.

Even then, the Pilots would still have a chance, but another turnover and a pair of free throws sealed the Lady Pilots’ fate.

Alexa Isaly led the Lady Pilots with a game-high 14 points, including a pair of three-balls, while Autumn Biesel netted six markers. Cassidy McCullough finished with four points, while the rest of the points came from Megan Beard, Chelsey Smith, and Emile Weaver.

The Pilots finished the season with a winning record of 12-11, shot 12-22 from the floor, and made only 3-7 free throws, while the Lady Pirates tickled the twine only 10 times, but cashed in on 12-19 charity tosses.
