MHS Freshman B-Ball Has Shortened Season

By Staff | Feb 9, 2011

The Magnolia Boys’ Freshman Team finished its season with five wins and four losses. The reduced number of games was due to starting the season late and the weather.

Players on the team included Jacob Starkey, Jacob Brill, Dylan Fruner, Drew Estep, Jason Keller, Logan Massey, Eric Smith and Kevin Taylor. The Eagles were coached by Larry West.

The team’s five wins were over Monroe Central, John Marshall, Wheeling Park Red, Tyler and Ritchie County.

In the Monroe Central game, Fruner led the way with 17 points, followed by Estep with eight. Starkey chipped in with seven points, while Brill and Keller netted six and five points, respectively, in a 43-37 victory.

Fruner also paced the Eagles with 15 points in defeating Park, 46-39. Keller and Starkey each tallied eight points, while Estep, Brill, and Smith added seven, six, and two points, respectively.

At Ritchie, the Eagles won, 67-35, with Fruner hitting for 30 points to lead the charge, while Brill and Estep teamed for 25. The Eagles lost to St. Marys by four points, with Keller leading the way with 13 points.

Magnolia then went on to defeat Tyler Consolidated, 37-29, with Fruner again leading the way with a game-high 15, while Brill netted 10 markers. Magnolia then defeated John Marshall, 46-36, with Fruner taking top honors with 17 points. Brill followed with 12, Estep, nine; Keller, five; and Starkey three points.

After losing to Bishop Donahue, the Eagles beat Wheeling Park Red at home and then turned around and lost to them at the Palace on the Hill in the final game of the season, by the score of 55-46. Fruner paced the Eagles with 23 points, while Brill netted 12 markers. Estep tallied five points, while Smith scored four and Keller a deuce.
