Justin Fox To Receive Dapper Dan Award For Male Athlete

By Staff | Feb 2, 2011

Two Ohio Valley athletes who excelled not only last year but throughout their varsity careers have been selected Male and Female Athletes of the Year by the Upper Ohio Valley Dapper Dan Club.

Magnolia High School football standout Justin Fox and Fairmont State basketball luminary Ashley Vavrek, a Bellaire High product, will be feted at the 44th annual Charity Awards Dinner on Saturday, Feb. 19 at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling. A social hour starts at 5 p.m. followed by dinner at 6 o’clock.

“Both Justin and Ashley have represented their schools, and the Ohio Valley, well not only in 2010 but over their careers and deserve to be singled out for the top honors,” Dapper Dan president Dan Olexia said.

Fox is the winningest quarterback in Ohio Valley, and West Virginia, history, who led the Blue Eagles to a school-best 14-0 record and W. Va. Class AA championship in 2010.

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound senior, who won the Kennedy Award from the W. Va. Sports Writers Association as the state’s top player, was a four-year Magnolia starter at quarterback-defensive back-kicker-punter while the Wetzel County team won 45 of 53 games (56 is maximum in W. Va.). He seldom came off the field.

While unbeaten Magnolia won its first state crown since 1964, the season capped a four-year career when the Eagles also finished as state runner-up, state semi-finalist and state quarter-finalist as a freshman.

This season, Fox rewrote Magnolia passing records at a school which has produced more all-state quarterbacks than any W. Va. team. He broke Eagle career standards posted by two-time Kennedy Award winner Mark Cisar, now the head coach at Union Local.

As a senior, Fox completed 149 of 231 passes for 2,474 yards and 29 touchdowns while also running for nine scores. He also kicked 71 conversions.

He was selected first team Class AA punter as a sophomore; first team all-state defensive back as a junior; and first team all-state quarterback , and offensive team captain, as a senior.

Fox, also an all-state baseball player, was a three-time All-Valley and All-OVAC selection and co-captain of the All-OV “Big School” selections in 2010.

He is the son of Jeff and Jill Fox of New Martinsville.
