Ron Mauck OVAC?Wrestling Tournament Detailed
River High School wrestlers Josh Bartrug and Devin Talbott placed second and third, respectively, in separate weight divisions at the 2011 Ron Mauck OVAC Wrestling Championship Jan 21-22 at Wheeling WesBanco Arena.
Bartrug, last year’s winner in the 103 weight division, came into the tournament as the number one seed with a16-2 record in the 112 weight class, while Talbott was the third seed with a record of 16-1 in the 119 weight division.
The Pilots, coached by Marty Winkler, had nine wrestlers competing: Zach Strickland, in the 125 weight class; Kole Smith, in the 140 weight class; James West, in the 145 weight class; Jordan Sapp, in the 152 weight class; Joseph Dotson, in the 189 eight class; Brett Rosen, in the 215 weight class; and Hank Goble, in the heavy weight division.
In the opener, Bartrug competed against Jessica Griffith of Morgantown High School and pinned her 1:19 into the first period. In his second bout, Bartrug pinned Donavan Laughman of Cambridge in 1:20 of the first period. In the quarterfinals, Bartrug took care of business by defeating Justin Callarik of St. Clairsville, 8-0 to move into the championship bout against Lance Hill of Parkersburg South. The match went into overtime, where Hill scored the first points to win the championship.
Talbott wasted little time in his opening match, defeating John Marriner of Toronto early in the period. In his second match, Talbott pinned Nathan Kirk of Buckeye Local and then lost his third match, 1-0, to Jeremy Border of Cambridge. Border went on the place second in the tournament weight division.
Meanwhile, Talbott went through the loser’s bracket and defeated David Jeffery of Parkersburg South 10-2 and Ryan Richter of Monroe Central by the score of 22-6 to advance to the consolation match against Brandon Llewellyn of Steubenville. Talbott took him to the end, defeating him 8-2 and capturing third place in the 119 pound weight division.
Kole Smith from River didn’t make weight and forfeited his match. However, his teammate, Zach Strickland, had a bye in first match in the 125 weight class and then was pinned by Hunter McLaughlin of Weir. Strickland would defeat Justin Patterson of Meadowbrook in 34 seconds in the 125 weight division, abut lose 6-4 to Michael Yockey of St. Clairsville.
In the 145 pound weight class, River’s James West pinned John Anderson of Bridgeport and then got pinned by Jess Bennett of Weir to slip to the loser’s bracket where he lost 11-3 to Zack Steele of John Marshall.
Sapp lost his first bout in the 152 pound weight division to Zac Zoumpoulidis of Martins Ferry, but came back to claim a win over Chad Reed of East Liverpool. Sapp would fall in his third match with Ryan Vojvododich of Steubenville, 8-4.
Joseph Dotson got pinned in his first bout against Greg Fox of Cambridge in the 189 pound weight class. Dotson then defeated Reed Andrews of Morgantown before dropping a 6-3 decision to Tyler Givens of Beallsville.
In the 215 weight class, the Pilots’ Brett Rosen got pinned in his first match by Amos Leach of Union Local, but went on to defeat Preston Bier of Beallsville and then fall to Tim Laclait of Wellsville.
In the heavyweight division, Hank Goble was pinned in his opening match by Anthony Pederson of Brooke and had a bye in the losers bracket. Goble then lost to Jake Haynes of Toronto.
The Magnolia Blue Eagles, coached by Terry Sands, entered Shayne Harman in the 140 weight class; Joseph Rabel in the 189 weight class; Jared Wright in the 215 weight class; and Tyler Baker in the heavy weight division.
For the Eagles, Harmon pinned Ryan Wintermoyer of Morgantown and then lost 10-0 to the number-one seed Cody Churchill of Oak Glen. Harmon did not compete in the loser’s bracket because on an injury.
Jacob Rabel in the 189 weight class didn’t make weight and forfeited his match. Jared Wright got pinned in the 215 weight class by Evan Hamilton of Morgantown and then lost to Nate Tustin of Wheeling Park.
Tyler Baker defeated Cody Green of Beaver Local in the heavyweight class with a fall. He then lost to the number two seed Aaron Silverio of Shadyside, who won it all in the heavyweight division. He then lost to John Eckroth of Steubenville in the loser’s bracket.
Overall, Parkersburg South won the hole shebang, while Cameron won the Class-A championship. Other winners were: Caldwell, Class-AA; Oak Glen, Class-AAA; and Parkersburg South, Class-AAAA.
