Valley Falls To Wood County In Holiday Tournament
In the consolation game of the Bob and Sharon Burton Christmas Classic Dec. 18, Paden City fell behind, 26-2 in the opening period and couldn’t recover, as the St. Marys Blue Devils annihilated the hosts 71-25 to claim the third spot.
The ‘Cats were without the services of their top scorer, Zach Yost, due to foul trouble in the first period.
The Wildcats’ Geoffrey Bidwell led the Wildcats with eight points, including two three-point baskets, while Yost was held to seven markers. Jamie Billiter netted a basket from beyond the arch, while Taylor Still and Drew Bidwell added a charity toss. John Bates rocked the gymnasium with the last basket of the night.
Yost, along with Derek Renner and K.D. Arnett of St. Marys, made the all-tournament team.
In the championship contest, it was Wood County Christian against the Valley Lumberjacks. The first period was a thing of beauty, as both Wood County and the Lumberjacks swished the nets so much that Tournament Director and Paden City Head Boys’ Coach Fred King had to replace the nets.
Wildcat Jacob Ungar would start the game with a basket from beyond the arch and the Lumberjacks would go to Clay Ueltschy in the paint who would drain a nice jumper to pull to within one point.
Both Ungar and the ‘Jacks’ Alex “Hondo” Henderson traded baskets from beyond the arch. The Wildcats would tickle the twine from beyond the arch six times in the first period, while the Lumberjacks netted five, including three by Henderson and one each by Ronald Morris and Jeremiah Burch. But, the Wildcats would lead 27-24 with only a couple shots missing their mark by each team in the period.
The second period was more of the same as Wood County and Valley locked horns, with neither team falling behind by more than four points. However, the Wildcats would extend their lead to four points, 47-43, at the break.
Morris and Ueltschy paced the quarter with three baskets, while Henderson netted a runner and a triple. Wood County stayed hot from the outside, netting four threeballs, while the ‘Jacks drained one bomb.
In the third period, both teams cooled down just a bit, as Wood County and Valley each tallied 15 points heading into the final period with the Wildcats on top 62-58. The Wildcats’ foursome of Ungar, Cody Gutberlet, Christian Gander, and Seth Tackett would drain a three-pointer after a three-pointer to widen their advantage and win the annual event in Bob Burton Gymnasium.
Wood County’s Ungar, Gutberlet, and Tackett each earned a spot on the all-tournament along with Henderson and Ueltschy.
Ungar tallied 26 points for Wood County, including six baskets from behind the arch. Gutberlet, Gander, and Tackett netted 21, 14, and 12 points, respectively, including eight three-point baskets. As a team, the Wildcats made 14 baskets from beyond the arch, while the ‘Jacks netted nine.
Henderson led all scorers with 34 points, including seven baskets from long range, while dishing off four assists. Ueltschy contributed 21 points and hauled in seven rebounds.
Morris followed with nine points, including one triple and pulled down five boards. Burch tallied seven points, including one from long range, while dishing off a game-high six assists.
Other ‘Jacks contributing points included Cody Bates, Davie Sivert with a deuce, and Gregory Anderson with a free throw. Garrett Ueltschy didn’t score, but he contributed five boards and kept the ball alive on the offensive glass.
