Scars Of Mirrodin Leaves Its Mark On New Martinsville
Scars of Mirrodin, the latest expansion to Magic: The Gathering – the world’s most popular trading card game – is set to come out this Friday.
In celebration, UnderGround Games held a pre-release event at Radio Shack in New Martinsville on Sept. 25. The event consisted of a series of four separate tournaments which garnered a total of 48 entrants.
Participants came from as far away as Belmont, Ohio; Parkersburg; and Fairmont. Players in all events were given special promotional cards as well as other prizes.
The first two events were sealed deck events utilizing six booster packs of Scars of Mirrodin to compete in a Swiss draw-style tournament, won by Jaron Denham and Brian Rogers.
Denham overcame the competition in the first sealed event using a black/blue control deck featuring many cards with the new Proliferate ability including two Thrumbingbird and Quicksilver Gargantuan cards, and Chimeric Mass for a finisher.
Rogers played a green/red deck that relied on several large creatures like Ezuri’s Brigade and efficient artifact removal including two Shatter cards.
The top four players from each of these events were then invited to play in an eight-man, single-elimination draft to determine an overall winner for the day’s event.
The final match came down to Brian Rogers and Scot Archbold. Rogers had drafted an all blue heavily artifact-oriented deck that relied mainly on the new Metalcraft ability via cards like Chrome Steed and Snapsail Glider but it was not enough to overcome the mono-white aggro deck wielded by Archbold.
Archbold played several highly efficient creatures like Auriok Sunchaser and Sunspear Shikari which have great synergy with the many inexpensive equipment cards he played. The match was a slow, methodic duel but in the end Archbold’s well thought out play style won out.
Additionally there was one other eight-player side event draft. That event was won by Parkersburg area resident, Alex Wilson.
Scars of Mirrodin is scheduled to be released this Friday. UG Games held a release event complete with special promotional foil cards the following day, Oct. 2, starting with a booster draft at 2 p.m. followed by a sealed deck tournament at 6 p.m.
