Mountaineers?Nip Marshall, 24-21
The West Virginia Mountaineers improved to 2-0 on the season after scoring 18 unanswered points to come away with a hard-fought 24-21 come-from-behind overtime victory against the Marshall University Thundering Herd.
Mountaineer Noel Divine reached the century mark for his second straight game. He rushed for 112 yards on 23 carries. He also caught 10 passes for 62 yards, while quarterback Geno Smith connected on 32-45 passes for 316 yards.
For Marshall, Brian Anderson was 20-29 for 229 yards and three touchdown passes.
“Mountaineers never quit,” said WVU Head Coach Bill Stewart. “Everyone counted us out. It was just a bump in the road.” The Mountaineers will host Maryland at noon Saturday in Morgantown. The Thundering Herd will travel to Bowling Green University.
