OVAC All-Star Game Set For Sunday, July 25
The annual Rudy Mumley All-Star OVAC Football Classic will kickoff the 2010 season July 25 at Wheeling Island Stadium and several area graduates have been invited to play.
For Magnolia, Stingray Bates, Jared Blatt, and Andy Huggins will play for West Virginia along with Tyler Consolidated’s Nate Taylor.
Bates led the Magnolia Blue Eagles in rushing with 1,039 yards in 2009 and is the all-time leading ball carrier with 2,281 yards with 23 touchdowns.
On defense, he had three interceptions his senior season and returned them for 85 yards. He also ran back kicks tallying 442 yards on 19 returns and added 98 yards on 11 punt returns. From the backfield, he caught 19 passes for 198 yards.
Blatt, a standout on both sides of the ball, accumulated 919 yards on 57 catches and 11 touchdowns at the tight-end position, while scoring 66 points. On defense, he had 42 solo tackles and helped on 118 others.
Huggins was a three-year starter on the front line that made it possible for the backfield trio to reach the two top spots in Magnolia history, while at his center position.
Taylor finished his senior year as the leading rusher and point-getter at Consolidated and was one of the top rushers in the state with 203 carries for 1,788 yards and 23 rushing touchdowns. He has caught 15 passes for a total of 395 yards and five reception TDs. Taylor scored a total of 168 points during the 2009 season.
Besides the football game there is a McDonald’s OVAC All Star Band, Queen of Queens pageant , and two cheerleading squads.
Magnolia Head Cheerleading coach Brittany McGinnis is coaching the West Virginia All Star cheerleaders that will include area cheerleaders Rebecca Blair from Magnolia; Amanda Tallman and Stephanie West from Paden City. Kristy Smith from River High School will be cheerleading for the Ohio Team.
The McDonald’s All-Star Band will be led by River High School Band Director Dru Meyer.
She will have 223 kids at her disposal and will have local band members Maddie Bridgeman, Lindsay Cain, and Michael Myers from Magnolia; Kylie Brown, Zach Schnegg, Josh West, and Katrina Whittington from River High School; Amanda Goodfellow, Charlie Hamilton, Nichols Morris, and Hannah West from Tyler Consolidated and Erik Byard, Annaliese Henderson, Rachel Ice, Spencer Mason, Brady Nolan, Breanna Nolan, Ezra Rice, Hunter Ring, Brian Sell, Ashley Staley, Cassie Ueltschy, Sarah Wells, and Tristen Willey from Valley High School.
Former OVAC All-Stars making a return trip for their 10-year reunion include, Paden City’s Aimee Billiter. Former All-Stars from the 1953, 1954, and 1955 include, Robert Morgan and Tom Herrick from Magnolia.
Laken Lancaster from River High School is the only area 2010 Queen of Queen contestant.
There are 36 schools being represented during the OVAC All-Star Classic, including 223 band members, 22 Queen of Queen candidates, 17 cheerleaders, and 60 football players.
Tickets are on sale at Witschey’s Market with tickets available for $7. All tickets at the gate will be $10. All children under the age of five are admitted free of charge.
