Eagles Give Riders; Walking Papers
The Magnolia Lady Eagles took advantage of five Weir Rider errors in its convincing 10-0 win in New Martinsville May 13. In addition, MHS hurler Tori Tharp limited the Riders to three hits and struck out 15 batters to do her part in advancing the ladies to the Region I championship playoffs.
Magnolia pushed across three unearned runs with two outs in the top of the first. With runners on second and third, the Eagles’ Abbey Horner beat out a slow roller that the Riders’ first and second basemen didn’t communicate well on. The two on-base Eagle runners also cashed in on the miscue and crossed the plate. Andrea Lockhart then hit a solid single to score Horner and cap off the first inning.
Eagle standouts Alexajo Hanna and Marissa Bosley each drilled singles in the second frame before Tharp helped herself out at the dish with a run-scoring double. Bosley made it home on a Horner sacrifice fly for a 5-0 Magnolia lead after one and a half innings of play.
Neither team could muster any offense until the Big Blue tallied two runs in the top of the sixth. Horner plated two runs with a hustling three-bagger, before Dallas Mullett, Hanna and Bosley each knocked in runs in the seventh to help give the Eagles their 28th win of the season and a date with the 32-2 Ritchie County ‘Running Lady Rebels May 20 at the Eagles Coop in New Martinsville. Ritchie trashed Point Pleasant with a 20-0 victory May 13 to earn a date with the Lady Eagles.
Tharp struck out 15 and walked one to gain the nod from the rubber, while she, Horner and Bosley each pounded out three base hits. Lockhart and Hanna each added RBI singles.
