Lumberjills ‘Steal’ Game From Morgantown Trinity

The Valley ‘Jills had 14 steals and dished off 14 team assists to spearhead them into a stunning 56-50 victory over Morgantown Trinity in girls’ basketball action Jan. 23 at Valley High School.

The ‘Jills outscored Trinity 15-12 in each of the first two periods to take a 30-24 lead at the break.

However, Trinity closed the gap in the third period before Valley out scored Trinity 19-15 in the final period to gain the nod.

Tiffany Hayes led the way offensively for Valley with 15 points that included a three-point bucket. She got a double-double after pulling down 10 rebounds. Brittany Guthrie followed with 12 points, including a threeball, while dishing off six assists and taking away four Trinity balls.

Heidi Shaw and Morgan Starkey each tallied seven markers, with Starkey adding four steals. Jackie Greathouse and Megan Butcher each scored three points for the Lumberjills.

The Valley Lumberjills couldn’t overcome a 13-6 third period against the home-standing Weirton Madonna Blue Dons Jan. 20 in a 48-43 loss in a OVAC and Mason-Dixon Conference tilt.

After one period of action, the visiting Lumberjills fell behind by a deuce at 12-10 and slipped to 28-25 at the break.

After a bad third period that saw their deficit climb to double digits, the ‘Jills made a late run in the fourth frame to close the gap to the 48-43 final.

Brittany Guthrie tallied a team-high 15 points, including a pair of three point baskets, while the duo of Morgan Starkey and Jackie Greathouse teamed for 18 points, including a basket each from beyond the arc. Tiffany Hayes added six markers for the Lumberjills, while Leah Morris tallied four points.
