Hundred Hornets Upset Notre Dame, 65-43
The Hundred Hornets’ Jordyn Gorby knocked in a game-high 31 points, including a pair of threeballs, to help lead the Lady Hornets to a convincing 65-45 upset of Notre Dame at Hundred High School Jan 18.
The Hornets raced out to a 22-13 lead after one period, led by the duo of Gorby and Raven McDiffitt, who combined for 15 of Hundred’s 22 points in the period. The heavily-favored Lady Irish tallied 10 points in the second, but Gorby scored half of the Hornets’ 14 points to carry a 36-23 lead into the locker room at the break.
Notre Dame turned around the scoring in the third period to cut the deficit a little. However, the Lady Hornets, led by Gorby, put the exclamation point to the game by marking up 13 points of the Hornets’ 19 in the final eight minutes to seal the win.
“The girls came out to play,” said Assistant Coach Terry Metz who was filling in for Head Coach Mike Ray. “Our girls played their best game defensively against a formidable opponent. I couldn’t slow the girls down. They just wanted to prove a point that they can play basketball against the big girls.”
McDiffitt chipped in 20 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double, while Gorby added nine rebounds, four assists, and three steals to go along with her 31 points. Macy Woods netted eight markers, including a pair of triples, while Haley Hayes and Lindsay Burley finished the Hornet scoring.
Although Katie Tennant didn’t score any points, she added quality time on the floor by playing tough defense on the Irish center and hauling in six rebounds and keeping the ball alive on the offensive board.
The Hornets will take on Paden City tonight at 7 p.m. at the Hornets Nest. Paden City defeated the Lady Hornets in the first meeting and Hundred is ready for ‘Cat.
