‘Jacks Win OT Thriller
The Valley Lumber-jacks’ Matthew Poling had a career night Jan. 2 at Beallsville, scoring 26 points, including a pair of three pointers, to lead his team to a 73-66 overtime victory against the Blue Devils and improve to 5-1 on the season.
Valley outscored their host in each of the the first two periods, but the Blue Devils fought back to knot the game at 59 with a made foul shot at four seconds remaining to force a four-minute overtime period.
Poling let loose a threeball as time expired, but, the shot missed its mark.
In the overtime period, Poling and Ronald Morris each nailed a basket from beyond the arc and teammate Clay Ueltschy swished four straight charity tosses to take a 10-point lead and gain the victory.
Besides the scoring of Poling, Morris and Alex Henderson teamed for 31 points, while Clay Ueltschy added seven points and seven rebounds.
Jeremiah Burch netted four points, while Dustin Bickerstaff netted three and Garrett Ueltschy tallied two points and hauled in seven boards for the Lumberjacks.
Morris, who had his first double-double of the season, added 10 rebounds to go with his 16 points and three steals.
Sam Jackson netted 20 points for the Blue Devils, while Tyler Spence and Josh Baldridge netted 10 points in a losing effort for Beallsville.
The Lumberjacks will take on Bishop Donahue in McMechen Jan. 8, with the junior varsity tipoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
