Lumberjills Split Two Games

In their second game of the season Dec. 4, the Valley Lumberjills took a 9-6 lead over the Cameron Lady Dragons after one period, but fell behind 21-19 at the break. But, in the third, the ‘Jills exploded for 16 points to claim a 46-41 victory.

Junior point guard Brittany Guthrie led all scorers with 14 points, including four baskets from beyond the arc and dished off six assists. Tiffany Hayes followed with 10 points, including a pair of threeballs.

After getting herself in foul trouble in the first period, Jackie Greathouse netted nine points, including a three point basket and a driving layup, while hauling in five boards.

Leah Morris chipped in with six points and hauled in a team-high seven rebounds, while Morgan Starkey netted five points and six rebounds. Heidi Shaw came off the bench to add quality minutes, while netting two points and played excellent defense.

The Lumberjills will play their next seven games on the road, starting at 6 p.m. Dec. 9 with Notre Dame and will play at Paden City in the holiday tournament Dec. 11 with their first game set at 7:30 p.m. On the following day, and the second either at 6 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. depending if they win or lose in the first game.

The ‘Jills opened their 2009-10 season with a 48-40 loss to the Lady Bishops Donahue Dec. 2 in McMechen.

After falling behind 31-22 at the break, Valley reeled off 15 points, while holding Donahue to seven points to make it 38-37 heading into the final period. However, the home team held the ‘Jills to only three points in the final period to claim the victory.

Guthrie swished the cords for a team-high 15 points, including a pair of three point baskets, and was 7-9 at the charity stripe. Tiffany Hayes added 11 markers for the ‘Jills, including one basket from beyond the arc, while Starkey netted six points.

Morris chipped in with a three pointer and a pair of free throws, while Dani Hayes added a two pointer and a free throw.
