RHS vs M. Central
The River Pilots volleyball team hasn’t had the best of seasons so far this year, but they continue to show up and give 100 percent on the floor each and every match they play. It was ever so evident against the 12-5 Monroe Central Seminoles Oct. 6 at Dick Potts Gymnasium.
Although the Lady Pilots lost, they gave the Lady Seminoles fits. In set one the Pilots hung tough for the better part of the match, but quickly lost out against a much larger team, to the tune of 25-10 in the first set.
Again the Pilots hung tough in set two with excellent volleys. However, the Seminole front line finally got on track, despite the excellent play of the Pilots, and put the home team away in set two, 25-12.
After a gallant effort, the Pilots couldn’t hang and dropped the third set 25-8 to lose the match.
The Lady Pilots’ Rachel Biesel paced the hosts with a team-high nine points, while the duo of Kelsey Caretti, and Brianne McCune evenly split 10 points. Caretti added two digs for the Pilots, while McCune paced the Pilots with six kills. Jo Haslam contributed four points and added three digs, two blocks, and jolted three kills, for a fine all around performance. Annie Turner led River with six assists, while scoring three points, and blasting a slam for a kill. Brittany Harrigan added three points, while Lindsay Hendershot contributed a kill for Sarah Smith’s Lady Pilots.
River vs PCHS
The Lady Pilots played hosts to Paden City on Oct. 8.
The Pilots didn’t start well by opening up with a bad serve to fall behind, 1-0. Amanda Tallman from Paden City followed with a service ace and added a point before McCune blasted a kill to put the Pilots on the scoreboard.
Biesel connected with a service ace before the visitors tallied a couple more points. The Pilots got a gift on a bad ‘Cat serve, but couldn’t hold serve on their next possession. However, the ‘Cats went on a 6-0 run with a pair of Amanda Sellers service aces and three Alli Bertozzi kills on assists by Amber Palmer.
River put together two straight points before the ‘Cats’ Bertozzi blasted a kill to the back row of the Lady Pilots.
The Pilots and ‘Cats exchanged points before McCune put it away with a kill for River. Paden City then scored four straight points before the Pilots persevered during a very long volley. Saves by the ‘Cats’ Dominique Craft and Tallman off hard shots by Biesel and McCune kept the volley alive along with a beautiful save by Caretti off a bullet by the Wildcats Bertozzi.
With the score 13-21 Paden City, McCune blasted yet another kill to pull the Lady Pilots a little closer. But two service aces by Bertozzi and a Tallman kill secured the first set victory for Paden City at 25-15.
In the second and third set, the Lady Pilots scored one more point in the second set and six more in the final set, but lost 25-16 and 25-21 to lose the match. The Lady Pilots played the ‘Cats tough, but battled valiantly.
The ‘Cats where led by Sellers with 11 points, including one service ace. She also added 19 assists on 31 sets and added 10 digs. Bertozzi netted 10 points, including four service winners, added seven digs, and had a game-high 16 kills. Tallman chipped in with two points, three digs, and eight kills, while Palmer contributed five points, one service ace. She added 12 digs, one kill, and had seven assists on 20 sets. Craft scored nine points, including three service aces, five digs, and drilled a pair of kills, while Megan Cutlip netted two points and three digs for the Lady Wildcats of Paden City.
For the home-standing Lady Pilots, McCune netted eight kills and scored four points to lead the way, while Biesel led the Pilots with 13 points, including three service aces. She also added four kills and three blocks in a good all around performance. Caretti tallied seven points for River, while Haslam netted six points, including an ace. She also added four kills, one assist, and she stuffed the ‘Cats four times with blocks. Turner had seven points and seven assists, while Harrigan netted five points and one dig.
River vs MHS
The River High School volleyball team has grown leaps and bounds over the past several weeks, winning its first two matches in a row against Linsly, and then fought off elimination on Oct. 12 at R.L. Potts Gymnasium, being down 12-3 against Valley and stormed back to win. The match with Magnolia could be what the doctor ordered. In their first meeting the Eagles put the Lady Pilots away quite easily, but this time the Sarah Smith-led Pilots hung right in there to the end, losing 21-25, 27-29, and 16-25.
Alexa Jo Hanna lead the Lady Blue with a game-high 18 points, including three service aces, while Jordan Babe added 16 points, including four perfect serves. MHS setter Padyn Ludewig added 15 points, Kelsi Heasley netted 11, and the duo of Annie Potts and Lacey Jackson each drilled eight points.
Babe smacked 10 spikes, landing four, while Heasley and Hanna each drilled nine, with seven finding the floor safely. Jackson and Abby Harlan each had eight spikes, but only four landed.
For the Lady Pilots, Annie Turner had a team-high 13 points, while Rachel Biesel netted 12. The hot-hitting Brittany Harrigan contributed nine points, including an ace. Brianne McCune followed with seven points, one ace, eight kills, and five blocked shots. Keysey Caretti added six points, including a service ace, while Telah Ewers and Jo Haslam added five and four points, respectively. Haslam added a game-high 12 kills and five blocked Eagle shots.
Valley vs Donahue
On Oct. 5 the Valley Lumberjills let three matches slip away, losing 25-23, 26-24, and 25-23 to Bishop Donahue, and then were out-manned against Beallsville on Oct. 6, losing three straight, 25-13, 24-12, and 25-14.
In the match against the Lady Bishops, the ‘Jills spread the wealth around with four starters in double figures. Tiffany Hayes was responsible for a game-high 18 points, including four aces, while the flying acrobatics and rifling serves by Leah Morris accounted for 14 points, including 10 picture-perfect service aces. Carla Mason chipped in with 13 markers, including seven service aces, while teammate Kristin Wolfe added 10, including two service aces. The rest of the scoring came from Ashley Staley with eight and Rachel Ice with seven, including five killers from the serve.
Ice had 36 sets and added a block, while the trio of Morris, Hayes, and Mason saw eight of their 29 spikes find the floor for winners. Ice also added eight digs, while Wolfe contributed five. Morris, Mason, Hayes, and Staley each added three digs in the heart-breaking defeat.
The Lumberjills will finish the regular season on the road against Madonna, Oct. 21.
