Hull Wins Match Play

The defending Match Play Grand Champion Dave Hull defeated Jay Mercer 249-228 to win week three of the 32nd Annual Match Play. Hull won $75, compliments of weekly sponsor Wetzel-Valley Agencies. Dave Johnson was the two-game high qualifier with games of 252, 216, and a 24 handicap for a 492 total.

Hull outlasted Johnson, 247-180 in one semi final, while Mercer edged Sean Johnson (Dave’s son) 233-210 in the other semi final.

Darla Starkey shot a 284 scratch game, the highest by a woman in tournament’s history, in the opening round of Match Play and ultimately finished fifth. Hull leads the Point List with 125 points, while Johnson is second at 115. The top 24 bowlers on the Point List qualify for the Grand Finale where tournament co-sponsors Miller Lite, Buddy Light Accounting and Chuck Ludewig Insurance Agency guarantee the $1,000 championship prize.
