Hornets Drop Opener, 46-14
The Clarksburg Notre Dame Fighting Irish scored 20 first-half points and added 20 more in the third period to knockoff the visiting Hundred Hornets, 46-14, Aug. 28 in Clarksburg.
Hundred got on the board on a Dalton Kuhn 86-yard kickoff return to start the third period. The Hornets added a Zach Watson 70-yard TD scamper and Tyrell Watson added the conversion run.
The Hornets lost Kuhn to an injury in the second period and junior back-up Tyrell Watson took over and moved the team well. Kuhn came back in the third period for a while, but moved to wide out on offense to finish the game in the fourth stanza.
Zach Watson led the Hornet offense with 91 yards and a touchdown, while Phillips tallied 31 yards. Kuhn connected with Phillips three times for 35 yards and hit Logan McDiffitt twice for 15 yards. Tyrell threw one pass and connected with Phillips for seven yards.
Phillips punted the ball three times and drove the ball for 144 yards, with the longest being 50 yards.
Defensively, Kuhn led the way for the Hornets with 13 tackles, while Phillips and McDiffitt added 10 and eight tackles, respectively.
“When Dalton couldn’t go, Tyrell came in and gave us a tremendous effort,” said Hornet Head Coach Rex Rush.
Hundred has a week off before heading to Pine Grove for the “Back Yard Brawl”, Wetzel County style, Sept. 11. That kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
