The Magnolia Blue Eagle Marching Band made its 2009-10 public debut in the Football Jamboree exhibition at Wheeling Island Stadium Aug. 22, after a season-kickoff concert and picnic two days earlier at New Martinsville’s Bruce Park.
The more than 60 instrumentalists and flag corps members worked hard over the summer to prepare for the season’s field shows, which it performed admirably at the jamboree.
Although saddened by the recent resignation of Band Director Fred Channel, students are committed to “standing tall and together” as they await the appointment of Channel’s successor by the Wetzel County Board of Education. In the interim, band parent and New Martinsville School teacher Brian Croasmun has been supervising practices.
Students attended a six-day band camp at the Gilmer County Recreation Center in July. Their long days consisted of many drills, exercises, marching, good meals, lots of laughs, and fun. Band members continue to practice almost daily to fine tune the show for the Blue Eagle football season that opens officially Aug. 28 at home against Tolsia. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
The band sponsored a fund-raising car wash at Mayo’s Exxon Station earlier this month and will compete at the Mountain State Forest Festival in Elkins during September. The band also will make appearances at events in Fairborn, Ohio; McKeesport and Connellsville, Pa.; and the New Martinsville Christmas parade.
In addition, the Blue Eagle Band Patrons will again this year offer fans tasty concessions at all home football games.
The students and band patrons thank the community for past and continuing support of all its activities, such as a performance at Disneyworld in March 2010.
To help defray student expenses to that event, band members are selling a Community Band Calendar with unlimited listings. The calendar sells for $8 per copy and is scheduled for delivery in December 2009.
Parents, grandparents, other family members, and community supporters are encouraged to join the band patrons in helping to support the school’s instrumental music programs. Band patrons meet on the second Tuesday of each month in the MHS band room.
