State Track Meet Ends With ‘Jacks Foursome Winning Gold Medals; Lady Wildcats Place Sixth In Class A

The Valley High School team of Dylan Edgell, Ronald Morris, William Streets, and Casey Pingley finished first in the 4 x 100 relay event at the 2008-09 West Virginia Track Championships Friday and Saturday in Charleston.
The foursome also placed fourth in the 4 x 200 meter relay and Pingley finished the 100 meter dash 0.16 second off the top spot.
In addition, the Paden City Lady Wildcats secured an overall sixth-place in Class A events.
In the boys’ competition, Magnolia finished 20th in team standings with five points. MHS strongman Matthew Riggs finished fourth in the discus with a toss of 131’5“, while the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Cameron Benson, Joseph Feeney, Nick Blatt, and Timothy Shreve placed sixth. Magnolia’s 4 x 400 meter relay team of Shreve, Benson, Blatt, and Brendan Kacor placed seventh in two very exciting races.
Paden City’s Taylor Still finished fifth in the 200 meter dash, while Josh Bennett placed ninth in the long jump.

Bennett was also on the 4 X 200 meter relay team with Still, Braxton Herrick, and Michael Grover, who finished fifth-less than two seconds behind the first place team.

In the girls’ championship events, Paden City’s Amanda Sellers received ribboned in the 100 meter hurdles, 300 meter hurdles, and the 4 X 100 relay. Sasha Newson placed fourth in the long jump, while teammate Shauna Durant finished ninth in the discus.
All the Class A relay events were filled by a Lady Wildcat team. In the 4 X 100 meter relay, the Lady ‘Cats placed third. In the 4 X 200 meter relay event, the ‘Cats were fourth and they were ninth in the 4 X 400 meter relay. They placed 11th in the 4 X 800 meter relay they finished fourth in the shuttles.
Valley’s Tristen Willey, the Region I champion in the high jump, finished sixth in the state track meet for a medal, while Danette Hayes placed seventh in the long jump. Lumberjills Jade Starkey, Danette Hayes, Lauren Ueltschy, and Lesta Kocher finished in eighth place, less than three seconds behind the top spot in one of the closest relay events in Charleston.

In the Class AA, the Magnolia girls’ shuttle team of Emily Patterson, Emily Amos, Holly McDonald, and Brittany Leek received medals for a fifth place finish. Other Lady Eagles that did well in the state meet included Sarah Mueller, who placed seventh in the shot with a heave of 30’7.” Teammate Allison Childers finished eighth in the high jump at 4’8″, while April Melott ran in three events on Saturday, finishing 15th in both the 400 meter dash and the 800 meter run. Melott also was on the 14th-finish 4 X 400 meter relay team with Bethany Butcher, Jennifer Emch, and Brittany Leek.
