Kocher Signs With Jesuit

Valley High School senior Lesta Kocher will further her education at Wheeling Jesuit University as a member of the Lady Cardinal Basketball Team and will study for a degree in athletic training and physical therapy.

Kocher, who has played basketball for four seasons under veteran Coach Larry Weekley, scored a total of 637 points in her career, making her the 13th highest scorer in Lumberjill history.

In addition, she pulled down more than 400 boards to become the ‘Jills’ 8th highest rebounder. During her career, she pulled off 112 steals that earned her in 10th place in steals.

After her freshman season, she averaged more than 225 points, 130 rebounds, 25 assists and 35 steals a season.

She was selected Honorable Mention All State, All-Valley and All Mason-Dixon Conference during her sophomore season. She earned All State Honorable Mention and All Valley. In addition, she earned second team honors in the Mason-Dixon Conference and Paden City Holiday All Tournament Team during her junior season.

In her senior season, Kocher made the All State Honorable Mention, First Team Mason-Dixon and Lady Wildcat All Tournament Team. She also was selected to the OVAC West Virginia All Star Team where she was second in scoring with six points, six rebounds and four assists. She also was elected team captain.

Kocher also was on the track team for four seasons and a state qualifier in her first three years. She was the long jump champion in Region I hopes to return to the state meet this year.

In addition to basketball and track, Kocher also has competed in cheerleading and was the squad’s captain during her junior and senior seasons.

An honor student on the VHS Principal’s List, her school activities have included participation in Raze and the Teen Advisory Board where she is currently the state secretary. She also has been a Quiz Bowl and Math Field Day participant and a member of the band.

She has served four years on the VHS Student Council, where she serves as its current vice president. She has been a class officer for all four years and is currently the class historian.

She is a member of the French National Honor Society, has been named student of the month and a delegate to Rhododendron Girls State.

She is the daughter of John and Debbie Kocher and the granddaughter of Lester and Lillie Bickerstaff and the late Arthur and Lucille Kocher.
