Longwell Wins Final Match Play Weekly Qualifier

Jim Longwell won for the sixth time this year by defeating Chuck Fisherkeller III, 220-178, in the final weekly qualifier.

The 31st Annual Grand Finale field is now set for Saturday, May 16 at 5 p.m., where tournament sponsors Miller Lite and Capital Beverage guarantee the $1,200 championship prize.

Longwell also pocketed $90, compliments of weekly sponsor WesBanco. Fisherkeller was the two-game high qualifier with 254-243 for a 497 total. Longwell eliminated Jay Mercer Jr. 191-168 in one semi final, while Fisherkeller ousted Ron O’Neil Jr., 243-195 in the other semi final.

Fisherkeller won the Point List sponsored by Buddy Light Accounting and Chuck Ludewig Insurance Agency with 870 points, while Jim Longwell finished second with 835 points.

Helen Agar won the Doris Westfall Performance Award by being the highest ranked women on the Point List at 19th place. Larry Henthorn won the Arkle Costanzo Memorial Award by bowling the most weekly qualifiers, all 35.

Jim Longwell won the Chup Robinson Sportsmanship Award, while Chuck Ludewig won the Kitty Brown Achievement Award for the most person/business most involved in the promotion of the annual event.

C. J. LaRoche will be looking to defend his championship Saturday, while 30 other bowlers will be looking to win the valley’s oldest Match Play Championship. Dud Snider, a three-time Match Play Champion, is the only bowler to defend the title in 1988-89 and 1989-90.

The bowling field will consist of weekly champions Larry Henthorn, 4; Jay Mercer Jr.; Rick Maffe; Gary Isner, 4; Jim Longwell, 6; Mike Hafer, 3; Arlene Cross; Ron O’Neil Jr. 2; Helen Agar; Al Spencer; Justin Paliswat, 2; Chuck Fisherkeller III 5; Eddie Kay; Rich Erlewine, 2; and Dave Hull.

Non-Champions (top 15 points) Mike Hall Sr.; Jim Agar; Lloyd Cross; Dave Johnson; Brandon Lipscomb; Jeff Gunn; Kenny Isner; Rod Nething; Sean Johnson; Matt Erlewine; Chuck Fisherkeller II; Mike Durant; Dave Farley; Arnold Isner; and past grand champion Travis Southall.
