Magnolia

There was no power shortage in New Martinsville when Parkersburg South and the Blue Eagles squared off April 16. Twenty-four runs, five home runs that included a pair of grand slams, one triple, three doubles, and 25 hits were cranked out at Mullett Field. South scored 10 runs in the sixth inning to hand Magnolia their second-straight loss, 15-9.

The Blue Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. But, South took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third on a two-run home run off Blue Eagle ace Andrew Robinson. However, the Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom half of the third and Seth Pay made the South “pay” with his first varsity career grand slam home run for a 5-2 Eagle lead.

Robinson yielded a three-run shot in the fourth and a grand slam homer in the sixth as South pulled away.

However, the never-say-die Eagles fought back with two runs in the sixth and two in the seventh for the final tallies.

Robinson struck out seven and walked only one, but yielded a pair of doubles, a triple, and three home runs in six innings of work.

Offensively, the Eagles’ Pay lined a bases-loaded home run over the right center field fence, while Robinson smacked a single and a double while plating two runs to lead the offense. Jordan Ash singled and drilled a mammoth home run over the right field fence, while Davey Howell added a single and a double.

Paden City

After a rocky start, Ryan Thoburn of the Paden City Wildcats struck out nine batters and hit a double for an RBI as the ‘Cats came from behind and beat the Frontier Cougars, 12-4, April 17 at Frontier High School.

Thoburn limited the Cougars to six hits, while Chris Loy paced the ‘Cats at the plate with a double and brought home four base runners. Malakai Anderson, Ricky Wright, Zach Yost and Keith Kline each plated runs for Paden City.

The Wildcats will host Bellaire St. John on April 23 at Paden City Park with the first pitch set for 5 p.m.

Valley

On a rainy April 15 in Tucker County, the Valley Lumberjacks scored three runs in the top of the sixth to go on top, 10-8. But, in the bottom half the inning, the umpires ruled the game was not safe to continue and went to the previous inning for the final score of 8-7, with Tucker County on top.

Anthony Quinn led the up and coming ‘Jacks with three singles and an RBI, with Matt Poling adding a pair of singles that resulted in three RBIs. Cody Bates drilled a Tucker County fast ball for a stand-up double that knocked in a pair of ‘Jack runs. Alex Henderson added two RBIs with a single, while Drew Wade and Cody Scott each nailed Tucker pitching with RBI singles.

Henderson, who was credited with the loss, struck out three and walked six.

The Lumberjacks fell behind 6-3 after two innings of play April 17 at Beallsville, but the ‘Jacks scored five runs in the third and Henderson came in relief of Quinn to hold the Blue Devils in the final five innings. Henderson struck out 11 Devil batters to win 12-8, despite six ‘Jack errors.

In the pivotal third inning, Freddie Guthrie and Quinn each singled. Cody Bassett singled to score Guthrie. Garrett Ueltschy drilled a triple to plate both Quinn and Bassett. After an errant throw, Ueltschy tippy-toed his way in for the final tally of the inning.

The ‘Jacks scored their last two runs in the seventh. Matt Poling singled and stole two basses. Henderson singled home Poling and, after Henderson stole two bases himself, Quinn belted a double to score Henderson.

Henderson, Guthrie, and Drew Wade each padded their batting average with three base hits, while Quinn, Ueltschy, and Cody Bates each added a pair of hits themselves. Henderson brought home four runs, while Ueltschy scored two base runners with his two hits.

The ‘Jacks don’t have any games lined up to play until April 27 at Clay-Battelle at 5:30 p.m.
