Pilots Handle Rosecrans
The River Pilot offense racked up 434 yards in its 38-13 win over Bishop Rosecrans, which gained only 102 yards, in the Division VI, Region 23 quarterfinals Oct. 31 at Flannery Field.
River struck first with a 59-yard run by Taylor Potts, who had seven carries for 110 yards and a TD. Then, Dylan Potts – who was 13-19 with 150 yards and a touchdown – scrambled around to find Devan Potts to put the Pilots up 14-0 by the end of the first quarter.
After a Bishop punt, the Pilots drove down the field and set up a 25-yard field goal by Tanner Wright, which bounced off the crossbar and through the uprights. After another punt, the Pilots marched down the field, ending with a 14-yard TD run by Tyler Brooks, who made it 24-0, Pilots. Brooks had eight rushes for 78 yards and a pair of TDs.
On the Pilots’ last possession before the half, Dylan Potts threw an interception with 26.5 seconds left.
In the second half, the Pilots started on their own 34-yard line and got big plays by Brooks and Dylan Potts, including a five-yard touchdown run by Brooks to put River in command, 31-0.
After yet another stop by the stingy Pilot defense, the Bishops punted the ball from their own 10-yard line and River capitalized by getting key plays from Daniel Starr, who had six catches for 91 yards. Tyler Jeffers finished the drive with a catch from Dylan Potts for a seven-yard TD.
Overall, River’s starting defense didn’t give up a point, with the two scores from the Bishops coming in the fourth quarter. The Pilots’ offense didn’t punt once in this game.
River continues its playoffs Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Marietta when it takes on fourth ranked Glouster Trimble, who beat Caldwell 36-7 in their quarterfinal.
