Hornets Comeback Short; Lose 26-14
Tygarts Valley Bulldogs scored two first period TDs and another one early in the second and held off a Hundred Hornet rally to win 26-14 on Halloween night, Oct. 31.
The Hornets took the ball down the field on a couple nice drives in the second period, but a fumble and a Bulldog goal line stand stopped the Hornets from making any noise before the half. Hundred drove the ball deep into Bulldog territory as time ran out in the first half.
Tygarts Valley responded to start the second half with a quick score to pull them out to a 26-0 lead.
The Hornets responded with a touchdown of their own, as twins Shane and Dalton Kuhn hooked up on a 35-yard TD. The Hornet defense held the Bulldogs to three and out, and took over on another nice drive to end the third period.
Hornet fullback Zach “Sunshine” Phillips hauled in a Dalton Kuhn screen pass for a 30-yard run deep into Bulldog territory. Logan McDiffitt made a spectacular catch and was hauled down at the five-yard line.
Two plays later, with the Jumbo Unit in, Phillips bullied his way into the end zone for Hundred’s second touchdown of the game. The two point conversion run by Dalton Kuhn gave the Hornets their final points.
The Hornets kicked an onside kick and, just by a slip of the hand, almost got the ball back. The Hundred defense held Tygarts to another three and out and then got the ball back. A 35-yard pitch and catch from Dalton Kuhn to Logan McDiffitt had the Hornets wanting more at the 10 yard line.
However, time ran out and the game was over.
“I was really proud of the way the boys stepped up and played a great second half,” said Hornet Head Coach Rex Rush. “We made a few mistakes in the first half, which got us behind early in the game. We have one last game to get in and we will work our butts off in order to get one last win in before the season is over.”
Dalton led the offensive assault with 24 yards rushing and completed 12 passes to four different players for 182 yards and a touchdown. Logan McDiffitt caught two passes for 58 yards, while Phillips hauled in seven passes for 73 yards. Shane Kuhn caught two passes for 41 yards and a TD, while Tyrell Watson caught one for 12 yards.
Defensively, Aaron Williams, Chuck Cunningham, and Chris McDiffitt each brought down 12 Bulldogs, while Phillips added 11 tackles. Roger Stalnaker made 10 stops, while Dalton and Shane Kuhn each added eight tackles. Cunningham had a quarterback sack for the Hornets, while Logan McDiffitt knocked down two Tygarts Valley passes, and Phillips knocked down one.
The Hornets continue on the road and will finish the season at Hannan this Friday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m.
