Valley Battles Cameron Tough on Homecoming Night
With a large homecoming crowd in attendance the Lumberjacks put up a good fight on Friday night against the visiting Cameron Dragons, but eventually fell by two scores 50-36. Prior to the start of the contest Michaela Miller was crowned Homecoming Queen and Griffith Briggs was named Homecoming King.
The Jacks only threw two passes all night, completing both for just two yards, however they turned to the running game and racked up 349 yards, and four touchdowns on 41 carries by four different players.
The Dragons scored first and took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter and continued to score with each possession and putting 44 first half points on the board. Valley added two second quarter touchdowns to go into the halftime down 44-16.
The Lumberjacks behind a potent running attack got their two scores in the second quarter on runs by Koleton Kinkaid and Ryder Gravette. In the fourth quarter the visitors scored to make it 50-22, but the Lumberjacks got a rushing T.D. from Griffin Briggs to make it 50-30. Valley added six more to finish the scoring.
The Lumberjacks were led by Wichterman with 12 carries for 136 yards, while Kinkaid added 112 yards on eight totes. Briggs picked up 55 yards on 14 carries and Gravette rushed seven times for 46 yards.
The visitors racked up 472 total yards and scored seven T.D’s on 7-9 passing for 75 yards and 397 rushing on 56 carries.
Valley picked up 14 first downs while Cameron added 16. Both teams were penalized for 55 yards.
“We played well and we’re showing improvement. We changed some things up and went to an older style of offense,” said Valley Coach Jeff Derby.
Cameron had 125 yards passing and 165 rushing. The Dragons led 44-16 at halftime, but the Lumberjacks outscored the Dragons 20-6 in the fourth quarter to end the scoring on the night.
Coming up next, the Lumberjacks confront the Calhoun Red Devils in an away game at Mt. Zion, WV on Friday. Valley will attempt to upgrade on its 0-6 season record. The Red Devils enter the match with a 1-6 record.
