Dawson Sets School Record

Valley’s Laken Dawson, pictured, broke her team’s single-game 3-point record against Paden City on Thursday, February 13, making nine 3-pointers against the Wildcats. She scored 39 points in total as the Lumberjills won, 77-19. Dawson’s record-breaking display came one day after the junior made eight 3-pointers in a win against Hundred.
One night after outscoring Hundred 72-21, the Valley Lumberjills poured it on an outmanned Lady Wildcat team 77-19 with junior All-State guard candidate Laken Dawson lighting up the scoreboard with 39 points including a school record nine 3-pointers.
Thursday’s contest played in Pine Grove was the last regular season contest between the two schools as both will be part of Wetzel County consolidations starting with the 2025-2026 school year.
The Wildcats fell behind early as Dawson knocked in 14 first quarter points to lead Valley to a 25-9 lead after eight minutes of play and a 40-15 lead at the halfway mark. Dawson ended the half with 21 points.
The second half was more bad news for Paden City as the Lumberjills defense never allowed a point in the third quarter and only four in the fourth., while Dawson knocked in 18 second half points all on 3’s.
Aiding the Valley victory was Carley Pittman with 11, Kennedi Dallison with nine and Michaela Miller with six points. Elynn Derby and Alexis Highley each added five and Aubree Mason had two.
“The girls played excellent defense again tonight. Offensively Laken had her second big game in the last two nights. As a team we have really come together and keep improving with each outing. They do all that we ask of them and their attitudes are great,” said coach Tommy Shannon.
Dawson ended with 11 steals and 10 rebounds for a triple double. Miller grabbed 13 rebounds and Derby had six assists and four steals.
“We hit the boards well tonight and our defense pressure was what we were looking for. Paden City played hard. They were short handed and have been fighting sickness and injuries. They are well coached, and the girls gave their all,” added Shannon.
Paden City was led by Aston Wade with nine and Kim Burch with six points.
Valley knocked in 29 field goals including 10 3’s and made 6-15 free throws.
Paden City hit eight shots from the floor and made 2-2 free throws.
Valley led in rebounds 36-14 and forced the Wildcats into 21 turnovers.
