The visiting Blue Devils of St. Marys had their way with the Blue Eagles on Friday night, October 18, in New Martinsville.

Things got off to a bad start from the get-go for the home team as they gave up two scores in the first few minutes of the contest and never recovered. By halftime the visitors had a 35-0 lead and coasted the rest of the way for a 41-8 win over the 1-6 Blue Eagles, whose only win so far came the previous week over visiting Frontier.

St. Marys had the ground game working Friday and rolled to the win behind Logan Eddy’s 131 yards and three touchdowns. The 2-5 Blue Devils also received 76 yards on the ground from Eli Cox whose 58-yard TD run with less than a minute into the game set the tone.

Quarterback Ryan Kent, went 7 for 11 passing for 106 yards and a 49-yard TD strike to Cox, while adding eight carries for 79 yards and a touchdown to the Blue Devils’ total.

Magnolia received 59 yards rushing from senior Landon Streets on just four carries. The Blue Eagles score came with under two minutes to play on a nine yard run from Freshman Greg Moore. Magnolia struggled against the visitors defense and managed just 181 yards of total offense in the game.

“That was a tough game. We just weren’t clicking and on the same page with each other and the unforced errors piled up on us fast. We turned it over on three drives with fumbles alone and had two near touchdowns called back for silly blocking penalties,” said coach Craig Mason.

“The injuries keep piling up on us. We now have 8 guys out due to injury and the few that we got back this week were re-injured early in the game and it puts us in a hard situation handling personnel and substitutions because we have to move so many guys around to try and make it work. Before we knew it we were down the 3 RB’s that we began the game with and then turned to freshman. They stepped in and ran hard and I’m proud of their effort. Heading into these last three weeks, we have to get the handful of guys that are close to coming back healthy and continue to simplify things for our young guys that are stepping in to fill these roles. We will continue with our “Next Man Up” mentality this week and try to get back on track and win these last 3 games like we did last year. I have faith in our guys to bounce back and I’m looking forward to next week and their response.”

Magnolia looks to bounce back into the win column on Friday with a visit to Ravenswood. Game time is slated for 7:30 pm.
