Cameron To Much For Hornets

The Dragons used double digit scoring from four players and placed 12 players in the scoring column to overwelm Hundred in a Class A OVAC semi-final matchup on Monday night in Cameron, to get an 85-29 victory over the visiting Hornets.

Cameron the defending OVAC and WV State Class A champions, are currently tied with Tucker County as the number one girls Class A team in the state. They received a game high 20 points from senior Kenzie Clutter, while Ashlyn Van Tassel hit for 14, and Emilee Dobbs and Maci Neely both added 13.

The Hornets got 19 points from Ashlyn Peters who went 10-14 from the free throw line and hit a 3-pointer. Kylie Morgan hit for six points, while Leah Dean and Aliyah Shreve each had two. The Hornets have been playing without their top scorer Roxie Huggins who was injured and may not return this season. They are currently ranked 19th in the state ratings.

(Dean gets a Triple-Double)

The Hornets battled tough on Thursday night against a talented Turkeyfoot team, but fell 61-43 despite a game high 27 points from Ashlyn Peters and a triple-double from Leah Dean, 14 points, 13 rebounds and a huge 12 blocked shots.

The Hornets who were on an 11-1 roll earlier in the season before losing Roxie Huggins their top scorer and inside presence, along with Summer Morris another huge part of their game, to injuries for the rest of the season, but they held their own the first half trailing by only five. However Turkeyfoot came out after the break and outscored Hundred 20-7 in the third quarter to make it an 18 point game with eight minutes to play. Both teams scored 11 points in the fourth quarter to give Turkeyfoot the win.

Aliyah Shreve added a basket for the Hornets, who hit 15 field goals on the night including four 3-pointers all by Peters. They also were 9-15 from the free throw line with Peters hitting 7-9 and Dean making 2-4. Dean cleaned up inside with her 13 rebounds to lead both teams.

Turkeyfoot was led by Younkin with 20 points, followed by Hall with 15, and Schortiger with 13. Schur added eight, and Mitchell three, while Wilburn added a basket. They hit 26 shots from the floor, including one three, and made 8-18 free throws.
