By Chuck Clegg - Staff Writer | Feb 8, 2023

What was supposed to be a Tri-Match between the River Pilots and Magnolia, along with a third team participating in the match turned out to be only River and Magnolia. The team that was supposed to participate instead withdrew to prevent injury and go instead to the OVAC duels tomorrow.

River forfeited five matches, giving Jaden Moffitt, Parker Wekau, Drew Rodriguez, Ryder Wilson and Zak Loy wins.

In the 144 pound class, Brayden Maisey was pinned in 2 minutes and 17 seconds by River’s, Hunter Strawn. In the 215 pound class, Braden Grimes was pinned by Braden Strawn in 1 minute and 51 seconds. In the 285 pound class, Drake Castilow was pinned by Marshall Bier in: 18 seconds.

In an exhibition match, Parker Wekau was pinned by Hunter Strawn in 3 minutes and 44 seconds. In a second exhibition match, Drake Castilow was pinned by Noah Lively in :37 seconds.

Several Blue Eagles are having a good year going into the final tournaments of the season. Senior Jordon Davis, wrestling in the 157 pound class has 20 pins on the year. Gage Scott, a junior wresting in 150 pound class is 11 for 11 on the season. Hunter Wekau, senior wrestling in the 144 pound class has 16 pins to his credit, and senior Lucas Zombotti has 17 pins and only 2 losses.

On the year so far Lucas Zombotti has 33 wins giving him an 85% win rate. Jordan Davis has 28 wins with an 82% win rate. Hunter Wekau has 18 wins. Eden Harlan and Gage Scott both have 14 wins on the year.

Two year Coach, Bryan Hostetler explained that the team’s three seniors, Lucas Zombotti who wrestles in the 132 pound class is currently rated 6th in the OVAC. He pointed out the OVAC is made up of 43 schools and is the biggest association of school conferences in the nation. He went on and said that Jordan Davis and Hunter Wekau, both seniors are very close to being ranked in the OVAC at this time.

At the current time, Magnolia has 22 wrestlers on their team. Three seniors and four juniors. The rest are sophomores and freshman. Coach Hostetler has high hopes with the team’s development that in the coming season they will be a group of wrestlers to contended with. Currently Magnolia is rate 4th in the OVAC.

Coach also explained with the state matches coming up, each wrestler must be ranked to complete for a state title. Lucas and Jordan are currently ranked in the top 10. That rank is a combination of both Single A and Double AA teams. That means seniors Lucas Zombotti and Jordon Davis are having excellent seasons.

River’s Coach Chuck Baker explained that his team was down five team members for the night match. Two sat out because they had too many points. He explained that as of now he has one wrestler in the heavy weight class that is ranked 2nd in the OVAC. Coach Baker has been working with teams for the last forty-three years. He explained that he expected 25 wrestlers to come out this year. He only had twenty out. But he explained that in the last 43 years there were a couple when he had only two out for the team.

Both teams will compete at Magnolia on February 8th. If you have not watched some good wrestling matches for a while, donát miss the opportunity to cheer on Coach Hostetler’s and Coach Baker’s teams’s they complete tonight in the Magnolia Invitational.
