Lumberjacks Defeat Calhoun County
Home standing Valley high school improved to 11-6 on the season on Friday night in Pine Grove as they took down visiting Calhoun County 50-34, behind 27 points from hot shooting sophomore guard Gavin Derby.
Derby hit six 3-pointers on the night, with four coming in the first half. He also hit 5-6 free throws and ended with six steals and four assists. Backing him on the night was Dallas Preat with 10 markers, including a 4-4 showing from the free throw line.
The Lumberjacks took an 11-7 first quarter lead and stretched it to 24-15 at the break. The third quater showed Calhoun gain a point with a 9-8 advantage, however the fourth eight minutes has Valley scoring 18 to 10 for the visitors, with Derby hitting nine points in the quarter.
Also scoring for the Lumberjacks was Patrick Higgenbotham with six on a pair of long 3-pointers, while Brigg Anderson added two baskets for four points and Landon Jerico hit a basket and a free throw for three points.
Valley hit 16 field goals in the contest including eight 3-pointers, and went 10-13 from the free throw line. Calhoun hit 11 from the floor including three 3ás and went 9-13 from the free throw line.
Valley Rolls By Hundred
Hot shooting Valley high school took down homestanding Hundred on Tuesday night, January 31, by the score of 75-51. The Lumberjacks came out shooting and grabbed an early lead they would never lose on their way to the victory.
Leading the way for the visitors was sophomore sensation Gavin Derby who knocked in a game high 26 points, including hitting five from beyond the 3-point line. Senior guard Patrick Higgenbotham was also on fire as he hit four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points on the night. The Lumberjacks ended the contest with four players reaching twin digits as junior Dallas Preat finished with 14 points and sophomore Trevor Stackpole added 11, including 7-8 from the free throw line. Ethan Shrimp finished with four points and Chris Kennedy hit a basket for two.
Hundred picked up 18 points from freshman standout Colt Sandy, including a 3-pointer and 3-4 from the free throw line. Brayden Bartrug hit a 3-pointer and finished with nine points in support, while Toby Michael knocked in eight points, and Karter Parson finished with seven including a pair of 3-pointers. Josiah Morgan and Tyler Sleeth added four points each, while Everett Johnson hit for two ans Jeffery Morris and Trey Huggins both got a point.
Valley made 27 shots from the floor, including nine 3-ás and went 12-17 from the free throw line. Hundred hit 19 field goals and sank 12-18 from the charity stripe.
