Rotary Challenge 2023 Basketball Tournament

The Magnolia gymnasium was the location for a day of basketball. Ten teams came to town to participate in the annual event. Organizers spend months planning the day long challenge, which included something new for this year. With the help of corporate sponsors, the games were live streamed onto the internet. A state of the art AI camera system filmed the entire event. This camera will now broadcast all the games held in the gym.

The day began with the Magnolia Girls taking on Ritchie County. Next up was Trinity Christian Boys playing Williamstown. Following that game Morgantown played John Marshall. At 4:15 the Blue Eagle JV team played Morgantown JV and capping off the day’s play were the Brooke Bruins taking on the Blue Eagles.

Throughout the day teams and families participated in an exciting day of High school basketball at its best. Over fifteen hundred fans filled the bleachers.

The Magnolia Girls were defeated by the Ritchie team. Ritchie’s fast pace play made it difficult for the girl to keep pace. Makia Litton scored one free throw, two baskets from the floor and one from beyond the three point line. Sienna McKeever scored four game points. Jenna Blair scored two from the floor and one from beyond the three point line, for five points while Lauren Gauser was high point scorer on in the game with six from the floor a six beyond the line, giving her 12 on the night. Shaela Holliday had a total of three and Aubrey Warder finished the night with two points. Ritchie 55 and Magnolia 38

The Magnolia Boys played Brooke. For three quarters the Blue Eagles kept pace with their opponents. Scoring eight in the first quarter and nine in the final quarter eventually but eventually the Bruins got the win. Hayden Plyes was high point scorer on the night with 18. Hayden scored five in the first quarter, but it was the third when he found his footing with four from the field and six from the outside three line. He added three more in the final quarter. Dubale Greathouse was next with 13. Dubale got hot in second quarter with a total of eight from under the basket. His ability to get off the floor gave him an advantage under the basket. Brayden Vargo found his hot hand in the third quarter with seven, he also score two in the second quarter. Kingston Christen ended with a total of eight on the night, six from beyond the line and two from the foul line. Gilbert Jordon added a three pointer in the final quarter. Brady Kocher scored a total of four from the field and three from the foul line for seven markers.

Before the Magnolia/Brooke game, two Time State Championship Coach Dave Tallman presented Mr. Jack Starcher with a basketball noting his achievement of scoring 1000 during his career at Magnolia. His accomplishment 62 year ago was not recognized at that time.

The main event on the night was the presentation of a board which lists all Magnolia players over the years who have score over the 1000 points in their time at Magnolia. Legendary Ohio Valley Sports writer, Doug Huff made the presentation and introduced the players who returned for the event.
