Hornets top Lumberjills
Visiting Hundred improved to 8-1 on the season with a 58-50 win over cross county rival Valley on Friday night, December 30, before a large crowd in Pine Grove.
The Hornets, fresh off a Holiday tournament championship over Mapletown, Pa, continued their hot streak with three players hitting in twin digits and another hitting for nine markers. The balanced scoring was two much for the Lumberjills who had two double figure scorers of their own, including the games top scorer Winter Higgins who hit for 18.
Hundred jumped in front early scoring 12 first quarter points while Valley hit nine. The second quarter had the visiting Hornets add two points to the lead winning the quarter 13-11 for a 25-20 halftime lead. Valley came out in the third quarter and cut the lead to one with a 14-10 quarter to make it 35-34 heading into the final eight minutes. With both teams fighting tooth and nail the Hornets got nine fourth quarter points from Ashlyn Peters and eight from Summer Morris to help the visitors to a 23-16 quarter and the win.
For Hundred Peters finished with 17 points, including a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth, and a 9-14 showing in the game from the free throw line. She was backed by the tough inside play of pivot Roxie Huggins who ended with 14, including 6-8 from the charity stripe. She also grabbed 13 rebounds. Morris continued to impress as she ended with 12 markers. Arconna Zarco added nine points, and 11 rebounds, while going 3-4 from the free throw line. Leah Dean contributed six points for the victors, and pulled down 12 rebounds.
The Lumberjills W. Higgins hit seven shots from the floor including a three pointer, while going 3-6 from the free throw line for her 18 points. The standout guard also added six assists and seven steals. She was backed by Harli Rush who scored 10 points all in the second half. Michaela Miller added eight points, while Laken Dawson and Evi Booher each hit for six and Cheyanne Higgins added two.
Hundred hit 19 field goals, including two 3-pointers and went 18-29 from the free throw line. Valley sank 20 field goals, including two 3-pointers and went 7-17 from the free throw line. The Lumberjills fell to 6-3 with the loss.
Hundred wins Christmas Tournament
Hundred kept up itás winning ways on Wednesday night, December 28, in Mapletown, Pa., as they won the Mapletown Christmas Basketball Tournament with a 59-50 over the host team behind MVP Roxie Huggins 26 points, eight rebounds, five steals, three assist and two blocks.
The Hornets used a big fourth quarter comeback to pull off the victory after falling behind in the first quarter 15-10 and playing catchup most of the way. At the end of the first half the Mapletown led 30-26 and increaded it to a five point lead entering the final eight minutes of play. Hundred got superb play from junior Ashlyn Peters in the fourth scoring nine of the the teams 20 points as they held the hosts to just six to pick up the nine point win.
Huggins hit eight field goals in the contest and knocked down 10-12 from the free throw line for her 26 points. She hit for eight points in the second period and nine in the third. Peters finished with double figures scoring 20 points on eight field goals, including two from beyond the 3-point line. She also went 2-4 from the charity stripe. Summer Morris added four points and five rebounds, while Leah Dead also hit for four markers and had three rebounds, two blocks and a steal. Areconna Zarco had three points and seven rebounds in support, while Aliyah Shreve hit a shot for two points.
Mapletown had three players hit double digits in scoring with Isabella Garnect leading the way with 15, including a three. Krista Wilson added 12 and Baiey Rafferty contributed 10, including two 3ás.
Hundred finished with 22 field goals, including two 3ás and went 13-18 from the free throw line. They had 30 rebounds. Mapletown hit 18 from the field, including two 3ás and went 11-18 from the free throw line.
The Win moved Hundred to 7-1 on the season with their only loss coming to last years state champions Cameron.
Hornets Defeat Jennette Jayhawks to advance to tournament final
Hundred Girls traveled to Mapletown, Pa. on Tuesday night, December 27, to play in the Mapletown Holiday tournament where they took on the Jennette Jayhawks. The Hornets wasted no time in taking the advantage as they jumped out to a 9-6 first quarter lead with junior standout Roxie Huggins hitting four opening quater points and junior Leah Dean adding three, while junior Ashlyn Peters hit a basket.
Period two was all Hornets as they increased their lead to 25-8 at the break. In the second frame Summer Morris also a junior went to work and scored eight points, including a 3-pointer and 3-4 from the free throw line. Peters was on as well as she hit two big 3ás.
The home team Jayhawks won the second half but it wasnát enough to over come the 17 point halftime lead of the Hornets. Jennette hit 18 points in the thrid frame to the Hornets 11 and took the fourth quarter 21-16 to pull to within five before time ran out.
In the second half Huggins came up huge to keep the Hornets in the game as she hit 5-8 fre3 throws in the third and scored 14 points in the fourth frame including a 3-pointer and 3-5 from the line. She led all scorers in the contest with 25 points, while also pulling down 14 rebounds and blocking two shots. Morris also hit a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, plus two steals and four assists. Peters added eight total points and Dean contributed seven.
The Jayhawks were led by Zoey Vincent who hit for 21 points, She got support from Franke Crosby with eight markers and Kim Wright with six. Venicia Vignoli and Jordan Bass each added five and May Jones hit for two.
