‘Jacks Chop Down Dragons

Tyler Kocher jacked two over the fence and knocked in a game-high five runs to lead Valley to an 8-3 win over host Cameron March 24 in a mutual season opener.

Taylor Bates doubled to open the game and scored on an RBI by Peyton Palmer to take an early lead and Valley added two more runs in the fourth. Palmer opened the inning with a solo homerun and Colby Bucher singled.

The Lumberjacks loaded the bases and scored the final run of the inning on a walk to first by Pete Shaw that brought Bucher home and giving the visitors a 3-0 lead after three and a half innings.

The Dragons scored twice in the bottom of the fourth on a pair of hits to close the gap to 3-2. With one out in the top of the fifth frame, the ‘Jacks Palmer singled. Bucher was hit by a pitch and Kocher plated them both with a three-run shot to give Valley a comfortable 6-2 advantage.

The Lumberjacks added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh. With two-out, Bucher singled and scored on Kocher’s second homerun of the night.

Cameron smacked a solo homerun in the seventh, but Trey Streets came in to strike out the last batter of the game.

Bates was 1-4 with a double and a run for Valley, while Palmer singled, scored twice, including a home run, and plated two runs.

Bucher singled twice, walked, scored three times and stole a base, while Kocher belted two home runs, scored two other runs and knocked in five. Tucker Cain walked twice and stole two bases, while Hayden Lancaster walked twice. Shaw and Dusty Lowe each walked once.

Palmer picked up the win, striking out nine in four innings of work, while walking five. Streets picked up the save, with three strikeouts and two walks.

Logan Routt went the distance for the Dragons. He struck out 11, walked three and hit a batter in taking the loss from the mound.
