Hornet Track Teams: Grown Leaps And Bounds

By Staff | Apr 1, 2015

The Hundred Hornet boys’ and girls’ track teams have grown leaps and bounds in their previous two seasons.

Returning to the boys lineup is state qualifier Holden Moore, a junior, along with senior letterman Courtland Armstrong, junior Greg Jones, sophomores Danny Stewart and Tyler Norris. The boys’ team looks to compete with the best of them.

Moore qualified in the 400 meters for the past several years and will be ready to showcase his talents once more, in track and other spring events and relays. Armstrong will compete in the shuttles and long jump, while Jones will return to the high hurdles and shuttles. Stewart will participate in the 300 meter hurdles and shuttles, while Norris will enter the shot and discus events. He also will fill in where needed.

Although senior Brandon Armstrong participated in baseball for the past several seasons, he will be trying his luck out at track this year, as will classmate Shane Matthews. Armstrong will compete in the shot, shuttles, and the high jump, while Matthews will compete with fellow classmate Isaac Hornbeck in the shot and discus. Both also will fill in where needed.

In addition, juniors Aaron Kolat and Dustin Adams, along with freshmen Tyler Simms and Zach Zedell, will compete for the Hornets. Kolat will enter the discus, while Adams will try his hand at the dash events, along with Simms and Zedell.

Nine girls are out this season for the Lady Hornets with only one senior on the teamCassandra Henderson, who will running in the majority of the sprinting events. With five juniors on the team and three sophomores, the future looks bright in girls’ track.

Junior letter-winners Ashley Miller, Kaitlyn Kuhn, and Meliah Umstead will team up with fellow classmates Samantha Opyoke and Kathy Cork to give the girls team plenty of leadership to go along with Henderson’s.

Miller and Kuhn will be seen in some of the sprinting events, while Umstead will take on the 800 meter run and 200 meter dash events. Opyoke will participate in the 400 meter dash, while Cork will take on the 100 meter dash as well as some other events, once conditioned.

Sophomore letter-winner Madeline Goff and classmate Miranday Grey will both compete in the dash events.

Boys’ Head Coach John Snedden and Girls’ Head Coach Jessica Ferrell will help as the others’ assistant coach. “Although we don’t have a track to run on, we feel blessed that we do have a nice walking path that the kids can run on” said Snedden. “Both the boys’ and girls’ teams are working really hard and we should be more competitive than our first two years.”

The Hornets’ first meets were scheduled at John Marshall track Complex on March 24 and 31 at 5 p.m.
