McConaughey Places Fourth At State
Magnolia’s Paden McConaughey finished fourth in the 170 pound weight division, while Caleb Nice placed sixth in the 182 pound division at this year’s West Virginia Class-A/AA State Wrestling Tournament Feb. 26-28 at Huntington’s Big Sandy Arena.
McConaughey lost his opener to the eventual state champion, Cole Boatright, 3-2 in a classic. Boatright also was last year’s 152 pound state champion.
McConaughey scored a win over Trevor Hawkins of Midland Trail by a pinfall and bested Colton Turner of Petersburg by a technical fall, 15-0. McConaughey then defeated Cam Stewart of East Fairmont 1-0 and Austin Cook of Sissonsville 2-0.
McConaughey lost the third-place match to Noah Adams of Independence High School by a fall. Adams was beating his opponent 12-2 before slammimg him to the mat, a move ruled illegal by the referee that gave Adams his first loss of the season at 45-1.
Nice opened with a pair of victories, a 5-3 decision over Stephen Baker of Riverview by a fall and a 5-3 decision over Andrew Fleming of Clay County. After losing a contest 8-4, Nice sustained a concussion and had to forfeit his next two match-ups, while still finishing in sixth place.
Riley Nice, who owned a 27-5 record, defeated Dalton Owens of Lincoln High School 16-8, but lost to Hunter Taylor of Independence in a close 14-12 match. In the loser’s bracket, he defeated Jon Garnes of Sissonsville 13-3, before bowing out of the state meet, one win from placing and losing by a fall to Eli Stump of Calhoun County.
Magnolia had a great season. They won the OVAC Dual Meet, while placing 14th overall in the OVAC Tournament.
The Big Blue grapplers also won the runnerup slot in the OVAC Class-AAA and scored 28.50 points in the state tournament with only three state qualifiers. “The boys’ competed and represented Magnolia well in the state tournament, as well as the entire season,” said MHS Head Coach Dr. Vince Monseau.
