Blue Eagle Grapplers Start Season On Fire

The red-hot Magnolia Blue Eagle wrestlers defeated Doddridge County 66-18, Toronto 54-27, Clay-Batttelle 60-24, and Weirton Madonna 45-34 in a multi-match Dec. 20 inside the MHS HammerDome.

In the opener, Blue Eagle Kyler Cecil (106 lbs.) won by forfeit, but would lose the 113 lb. match. However, Riley Nice (120 lbs.) and teammate Clay Adams (132 lbs.) each recorded pins to put the Eagles on top.

The Doddridge Bulldogs won the 138 lb. and 145 lb. matches by pins to retake the lead. But, the Eagles won their next seven falls to win the match. Chase Street (152 lbs.), Kaleb Simpkins (160 lbs.), Harley Price (170 lbs.), Caleb Nice (182 lbs.), Joel Hatfield (195 lbs.), and Brian Wilson (220 lbs.) each won by pin falls, while Donavan Sawyers (285 lbs.) ended the match by winning on a forfeit.

In the match with Toronto, Cecil won the opening match with a pin, but Toronto came back, winning the 113 pound match. Riley Nice and Riter each recorded their second pin falls of the night, before Magnolia lost the next two matches.

Robert Campbell (145 lbs.) won his first match of the night by a fall, as did Street. Simpkins, Caleb Nice, and Sawyers each picked up their second wins of the night by a forfeit, while Hatfield picked up his second straight win by a pin fall in claiming the win over Toronto.

The Blue Eagles scored 60 points against Clay-Battelle with pin falls by Riley Nice, Clay Adams, Logan Highley (138 lbs.), Sidney Burdine (195 lbs.), and Caleb Nice.

The Eagles’ Cecil, Riter, Archie Petin (152 lbs.), Caleb Nice, and Wilson each received wins via forfeits.

In the closest match of the night, Magnolia defeated Madonna 45-35 with wins by Cecil, Riley Nice, Jack Booth (126 lbs.), Yoho, Simpkins, Caleb Nice, Hatfield, and Wilson.

Blue Eagle grapplers who went undefeated were Kyler Cecil (4 wins), Riley Nice (4 wins), Doug Riter (3 wins), Kaleb Simpkins (3 wins), Caleb Nice (4 wins), Joel Hatfield (3 wins), Jack Booth, (1 win), Logan Highley (1 win) and Archie Petin (1 win).

The River Pilots defeated Doddridge and Clay-Battelle, but did not compete against Magnolia. No stats were available for River.


The Magnolia Blue Eagle Wrestling Team defeated the Weir Riders 61-15 in a dual match Dec. 16 in Weirton.

The dual meet started at the 170 lb. level with the Eagles’ Paden McConaughey and then with Caleb Nice in the 182 weight class with both winning by falls. Teammate Joel Hatfield would then win a 16-4 major decision to push the visitors way out in front.

Magnolia’s Brian Wilson beat his 220 lb. opponent by a fall and teammate Donavan Sawyers won a major decision, 6-1, to keep the heat on the talented Red Rider squad. The young Eagles’ Kyler Cecil at 106 and Martin Baker at 113 lbs. each lost on falls, but state qualifier Riley Nice at 120 lbs. pinned his Rider opponent in 0.57 seconds of the first period to get the Blue Eagle grapplers back on track.

Doug Riter at 126 lbs. kept the winning streak going with a fall at 0.46 of the first period, before state qualifier Clay Adams at 132 lbs. won by forfeit. Teammate Logan Highley lost a nail-biter in overtime, 17-15, but the Eagles picked up wins on forfeits from Robert Campbell at 145 lbs. and Chase Street at 152 lbs. before freshman Kaleb Simpkins ended the bout with a pin at 1:56 in the first period.


Using a combination of four pins and seven forfeits, the Magnolia Blue Eagles started off the 2014-15 wrestling season with a 66-15 team dual victory over the Tyler Consolidated Silver Knights inside the MHS HammerDome Dec. 10.

Winning by pins for the Eagles were Kyler Cecil, Clay Adams, Chase Street, and Caleb Nice, while Martin Baker, Riley Nice, Jack Booth, Cameron Ramsey, Kaleb Simkins, Paden McConaughey, and Brian Wilson each got a win by forfeit.
