Hundred, Paden City And Valley Fall In Sectional Play

Paden City/St. Marys

Paden City eliminated St. Marys in the Region I, Section II quarterfinals with a 25-17, 25-12 and 25-13 three-set victory inside the Hornets Nest at Hundred High School Nov. 4.

Graeson Baker had a game-high 23 points, including three services aces, three digs, 35 sets and 15 assists to pace the Wildcats. Megan Pierce drilled 13 kills and blocked two shots to go along with 17 service points that included a pair of aces.

Abby Still drilled 12 kills and blocked four Blue Devil shots, while adding 13 points, including an ace. She also had two assists on three sets for a good night’s work. Taylor Cosper chipped in with 13 points, an ace, two digs and an assist, while Aubrey Neff tallied five points, two kills, and recorded 17 assists with 34 sets.

Dezirae Middleton contributed eight service points, including a season-high three aces, three sets with one assist and a dig, while Madison Kelly drilled five kills, blocked two shots and recorded a dig. Cydney Blatt slammed six kills, while Kallie Arnett smacked five kills and added a set.

Paden City/Clay-Battelle

In one of the best volleyball matches of the night, Paden City lost a heart-breaker in the opening quarterfinal match against the Cee-Bees, 25-21. The Lady ‘Cats had the pesky Cee-Bees on the run at 17-11 before falling 25-21 in the second set.

Paden City blew past Clay-Battelle in the third set, 15-25, before losing the fourth set in another thriller, 26-24, that knocked them out of sectional competition.

Baker again paced the Wildcats with a game-high 26 points, including a pair of service aces, while adding 63 sets, nine assists, five digs and a kill. Neff and Still each scored 12 points, with Neff adding 67 sets, 26 assists and seven digs, while Still drilled 15 kills, nine blocks and 12 sets with two assists.

In addition, Pierce and Cosper each recorded 11 points, with Pierce smacking a game-high 22 kills and one dig, while Cosper contributed 11 sets, three assists and two digs. Blatt jacked 13 kills, bumped up two digs and had an assist and Middleton scored a career-high 19 points that included a pair of service aces. Kelly also had a career-high seven kills and seven blocks, while adding six sets and two assists.

Paden City, who finished the season with a 27-13 record, will lose seniors Baker, Pierce and Haley Hizer to graduation this year. But, they will return an experienced squad led by Blatt, Cosper, Neff, Still, Middleton and Kelly along with Arnett and Katrina Heasley, who all saw varsity experience this season.

Valley/Hundred

Erin Brown served up 10 points, 13 spikes and 10 blocks for a triple double to lead the Valley Lumberjills to a four-set victory over Hundred in the Region I, Section II first round match Nov. 3 inside the Hornets Nest.

The Lady Hornets took the first set 25-15 against the Lumberjills, but fell 23-25, 15-25 and 11-25 that ended their season.

Sarah Bassett accumulated 11 points, including an ace, made 19 sets, two digs and a spike, while Rachel Baker contributed eight points, an ace, four spikes, nine blocks and four digs. Cassidy West served up seven points that included an ace and three digs, while Cassidy Price and Sammi Roberts teamed for eight points, three service aces, 10 digs and six spikes.

In addition, Grace Hayes added three sets, while Bailea Underwood tallied two points, three digs and a spike. Steshka Shrum scored and ace for all the Valley stats.

The Hornets’ Paige Shriver finished with four service aces, two digs, one assist and 15 kills to lead Hundred, while Mady Wheeler smacked seven service aces and drilled eight kills. Josie Phillips made 11 assists, four digs and four kills, while Emily Rine dished out 13 assists and made two kills. In addition, Miranda Gray scored two aces and blocked a shot, while Allie Hayes finished with one ace, one assist and five kills.

Shriver and Hayes will both graduate in the fall, while the ‘Jills will lose both Roberts and Bassett.

Valley/Tyler

The ‘Jills lost to top-seed Tyler Consolidated in the semifinals in straight sets. Brown tallied three points, blocked four shots and made two spikes. She also made two digs to pace the Lady Lumberjills.

Price scored three points that included an ace and blasted three spikes, while Bassett netted a point, a dig and had a dozen sets. Roberts bumped up eight digs and a spike, while Baker tallied a point, two digs and blocked four Silver Knight shots. West drilled a spike and bumped up two digs, while Shrum scored a point, while Underwood helped the cause with a set.
