Pilots Lose Another Home-Heartbreaker, 25-22

By Staff | Oct 22, 2014

The hard-luck River Pilots dropped another heart-breaker at Flannery Field Oct. 17 as Shenandoah scored a seven-yard TD scramble with less than six minutes remaining to come from behind for a 25-22 victory.

The Zeps opened the game with a 10-yard pitch-and-catch for a touchdown, but the Pilots denied the failed conversion kick. Joey Flannery hooked up with Broc Cross on a 28-yard pitch-and-catch of their own and teammate Colton Wright split the uprights to give the home team a 7-6 lead in the first quarter.

Neither team mounted any scoring drives in the second period, but the Pilots pushed their advantage in the third frame to 14-6 with a 24-yard Flannery-to-Cross pitch-and-catch with one quarter remaining.

Shenandoah scored two TDs before Flannery scrambled 10 yards on a keeper and hit Craig Hupp on the conversion pass to give River a 22-19 lead late in the game.

Shenandoah scored the game’s final points with a little over five minutes remaining and the Pilots couldn’t recover.

The Pilots gained only 46 yards on the ground on the night with Cole Isaly netting 40 yards and Flannery six yards. Passing, Flannery was 14-28 for 198 yards and two touchdowns, with Cross hauling in six passes for 93 yards and two TDs. Isaly grabbed six passes for 14 yards and Hupp had three catches for 88 yards.

Shenandoah moved the chains 16 times to 14 for the PIlots, while the Zeps were guilty of six penalties for 470 yards lost. River lost 35 yards on three infractions.

The Pilots will travel to Buckeye Trail Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
