Area Horseshoe Pitchers Throw In State Tournament
A few area residents placed in the top six of the 77th Annual West Virginia Horseshoe Pitching Association Tournament held Sept. 4 in East Marion Park, Fairmont.
Chalmer Coen from Smithfield won the Class-B Elder Class, making 210 ringers out of 448 shoes pitched, while James Carpenter Jr. (140-334) of Lumberport placed fourth and Charles Phillips (134-300) of Wileyville finished sixth.
In addition, Pat Huggins (120-370) of New Martinsville placed second in the Class-C Open Men Division, while Charles Kuhens (33-200) of Smithfield placed third and Monnie Goodrich (39-250) of Folsom fourth in the Class-E Open Men Division.
Also, Joe Haught from Reader finished fourth in the Elder Championship Class, tossing 181 ringers out of 294 shoes pitched. Ernie Helmick (56-282) of New Martinsville finished in fourth place in the Class-C Elder Mens’ Class.
To become eligible to compete, entrants must be from West Virginia and are to have combined State Association/WVHPA Membership Card.
The 78th edition of the WVHPA is scheduled for Ronceverte Labor Day Weekend, 2015.
