Jim Quinet Memorial
5K Run/Walk Saturday
The fifth annual Jim Quinet 5K Memorial Run/Walk will be held at 8:30 a.m., July 26, beginning and ending in front of Quinet’s Court Restaurant, Main Street, in New Martinsville, across from the Wetzel County Courthouse.
The early entry fee of $12 includes a t-shirt. Entry fee on race day is $15, with T-shirts available while supplies last. Registration on race day will be from 7-8 a.m. with the race to follow at 8:30 a.m. Water will be made available midway in the race. At the finish line, there will be water, sport drinks, and snacks.
Awards will be given to the first overall male and female runners; the top three in 14 and under, as well as in age groups 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69; and 70 and up. There will be no duplication of awards.
The race and all proceeds from it will support a scholarship fund in memory of the late Jim Quinet, owner of Quinet’s Court Restaurant, who was a standout Christian athlete and always carried a smile with him.

Free Youth Football Clinic
Offered Sunday
To kickoff the 2014-15 SUBWAY Sports Clinic Series, the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference will be hosting its ninth annual free youth football clinic in conjunction with the Rudy Mumley OVAC All-Star Charity Football Classic presented by Huntington Bank and WTOV9.
The clinic will take place the day of the game, Sunday, July 27, at the Wheeling Island Stadium.
Registration will be held from noon to 12:45 p.m. The clinic will last from 1-2:30 p.m. and will be directed by OVAC football coaches, including members of Coach Chris Daugherty’s Wheeling Park High School football staff. Additionally, Bethany College Football Staff will assist with the clinic. The instructors will teach the fundamentals of football with a focus on building self-esteem. The clinic is free and open to boys and girls ages six to 13.
Parents or legal guardians are required to have insurance and be present the day of the clinic to sign a waiver form. The OVAC is the largest functional high school athletic conference in the United States. It is comprised of 50 member schools with 12,000 athletes and 21,000 students, stretching across Ohio and West Virginia into 18 counties. The annual Rudy Mumley OVAC All-Star Charity Football Classic, presented by Huntington Bank and WTOV9, is slated for Sunday, July 27, at Wheeling Island Stadium, with kickoff planned for 7:15 p.m.
Beginning on July 21, tickets will be available at all area Kroger stores, Smitty’s Floors and many other Ohio Valley retail locations that can be found on line at the OVAC’s official Web site, www.OVAC.org.
Hunters Education Course Offered
The Young Ethical Sportsmen will sponsor a Hunter Safety Education Class in cooperation with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, Law Enforcement Section, at the Alma Fire Hall, Aug. 16-17. Hours are Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m.
Individuals taking this class must be at least 10 years of age to be certified. Those that are age 12 years or younger must be accompanied by a parent or adult legal guardian. Everyone must provide Social Security numbers and proof of age to be certified. All persons born on or after Jan. 1, 1975, must be certified to be eligible to obtain a West Virginia Hunting License. You must carry your Hunter Education Certification card, a State Photo ID, all required licenses, tags and written permission from the landowner, on your person at all times while hunting.
Topics to be covered at the classes will include: Firearms Safety in the Home and Field, Firearm Actions, Ethics and Safety, Hunting Regulations, Wildlife Management, Shooting, Survival, ATV Safety, Bow-hunting and Tree-stand Safety, and Trapping and Hunter Responsibility.
