Swimming Classes

New Martinsville Parks and Recreation Department is offering a new and improved swimming lessons program at Lewis Wetzel Pool.

Swimming lessons for ages three to six will include four 45-minute sessions: July 18, 21, 23, and 24; 6:15-7 p.m.; $15 per child.

Swimming lessons for ages seven to 12 will include four 45-minute sessions: July 18, 21, 23, and 24; 7:15-8 p.m.; $15 per child.

The goal of both courses is to identify skill level and strengthen swimming skills depending on each child’s strengths and weaknesses. The lifeguards will work with the group at each child’s own pace. Parents do not need to enter the water but are encouraged to watch from the deck. After this group lesson program, parents will be given resources to help carry on their child’s swimming skills on their own. On the off days in between lessons, they encourage parents to take your child to the facility during normal operating hours to practice with them. The NMPR will offer you and your child free admission during normal operating hours on these days and will continue to offer free admission for you (or one other parent/guardian) and your child until July 31, when your child presents his or her swimming lessons bracelet upon admission. Your child will be required to wear a bathing suit. No street clothes will be allowed in the pool.

Water Babies-Intro to Water will include four 30-minute sessions: July 28-31, 6:30-7 p.m.; $15 per child.

The course will be taught at Lewis Wetzel Pool for children six months to under three years old. Parent/guardian of the child will be expected to get in the water with their child. The same off-day privileges are given with this course.

In order to keep the child to lifeguard ratio low and give each child enough time and attention, the NMPR has to limit class size to 21. Sign up early, space is very limited! For more information call 304-455-9130.

Water Aerobics Classes Scheduled

The New Martinsville Parks and Recreation Commission is starting a water aerobics class. They will be held during adult swim at Lewis Wetzel Pool-Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to noon starting July 10.

The instructor for the class will be Betty Klug, who has conducted many water exercise classes in the past. The fee is $30 for five sessions or $8 for each individual class.
