Wheeling Jesuit softball recruit Mallory Chapman finished her high school career on a high, as she knocked in a game-winning three-run homer and struck out the final batter to give West Virginia a come-from-behind 8-7 win over Ohio in the OVAC All-Star game at I-470 in Wheeling June 5.

After being turned away by mother nature June 4, the game saw area softball players competing in a huge way.

Besides the homer and strike-out by Chapman, she singled, stole a base, scored a pair of runs, and struck out eight Ohio batters in four innings of work to get the save.

Lady Pilot Gabby Goudy struck out two and walked three in her three innings of work for the Ohio Buckeyes, while smacking an RBI single and reaching base on a nice bunt.

She also scored the go-ahead tally in the seventh. Right fielder Katie Shreves of Paden City reached on an error and later scored.

Ohio got on the board first in the opening stanza. After two batters reached base on errors, the Buckeye’s Lauren Figura drilled a rope to right that plated two unearned runs.

However, the Mountaineers tallied a pair of their own, as Chapman lined the first West Virginia hit to right and scored their first tally of the game in the top of the second. West Virginia tied the game in the third.

West Virginia tallied three runs in the fourth off Goudy. However the Buckeyes scored one in the sixth and four in the seventh to take a 7-5 advantage.

The Ohio all-stars started the seventh with five straight hits, with Goudy scoring the go-ahead run heading into the eighth.

With one out, John Marshall’s Sissy George beat out an infield single to start the Mountaineer comeback. Wheeling Park’s Ashleigh Sidon drilled her second base hit of the game, setting the stage for Chapman’s game-winning homer over the centerfield fence.

After tossing the first four innings, Chapman worked the final two frames that included the final and eighth strikeout of the game.

“It’s a good feeling to end your high school career with a win,” stated Chapman after the game.

“These last four years have been really fun and I love our team. There was no way better to end it with a win.”
