Lady Eagles One Win From State, Beat Knights, 4-2
Mallory Chapman drove in three runs, including a two-run homer, while striking out seven Maroon Knights and walking one to lead Magnolia’s 4-2 win over the #1-ranked Class-A team in the state Friday, May 16, in a regional semifinal held at the Hydro Field in New Martinsville.
After Chapman & Co. retired the Maroon Knights on just seven pitches in the top of the first inning, the Eagles went right to work in the home half. After a one-out Audrey Gibb walk, Chapman drilled one over the center field fence to give Magnolia a 2-0 advantage after one inning of play.
Wheeling Central threatened in the top of the second frame. After hitting a batter, Chapman struck out the next one, but a Blue Eagle miscue put runners on first and second with two outs. Chapman then closed the book with another strike out.
In the top of the third, Eagle errors contributed to Central’s two runs that knotted the score. In the bottom of the third, the Eagles went down in order.
With two outs in the top of the fourth, the Knights got one on with a bunt single, but Blue Eagle senior second baseman Jordan Grimm made a nice fielding play and tossed it to junior first baseman Katie Blatt for the final out.
In the bottom of fourth, Chapman walked and Abby Durig would reach on an error to put runners on the corners. Davianne Croasmun lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, plating Chapman and giving Magnolia a 3-2 lead after four innings of play.
In the top of the fifth, the Knights went down in order as Chapman recorded a pair of strikeouts in the inning. In the home half, senior left fielder Ashley Moore ripped a single and Gibb walked to put runners at first and second. Chapman then singled to left, scoring Moore and moving Gibb to third. Durig grounded out to end the inning, with the Big Blue on top 4-2.
After one out in the top of the sixth, the Knights got a free pass, but the Magnolia defense rose to the occasion and got out of the frame without any damage.
In the top of the seventh, the Knights went down in order, putting Magnolia in place to host the Region I Championship game Thursday at 5 p.m. against St. Marys. The winner will advance to the state tournament in Vienna, May 28-29.
From the plate, Chapman singled and homered and drove in three runs, while scoring twice. Moore singled and scored a run, while Gibb drew a pair of walks and scored a run.
From the mound, Chapman allowed just three hits, while striking out eight and walking one.
